São Paulo Daily Brief for Sunday, March 1, 2026

Welcome to your São Paulo daily brief for Sunday, March 1, 2026 — the first day of autumn and a day that ends with the biggest Paulistão semifinal in years. The temperature reaches 22°C with a 20% chance of rain, distinctly cooler than recent weeks as the season turns. Tonight at 20h30, Palmeiras host São Paulo at the Arena Barueri in a single-elimination Choque-Rei for a place in the Paulistão final; the winner will face Novorizontino, who eliminated defending champions Corinthians 1-0 last night in a historic result. In the cultural calendar, the CCBB’s monumental Torres García retrospective enters its final week (closes March 9), the MASP presents three concurrent exhibitions on the Avenida Paulista, and the Pinacoteca’s Trabalho de Carnaval coletiva continues at Pina Contemporânea. The markets closed Friday with the Ibovespa at 188,787 (-1.16%) after a hotter-than-expected IPCA-15, though the index still posted a 4.09% gain for February. This São Paulo daily brief covers weather, culture, transport, food, and everything you need for the day.

Joaquin Torres Garcia — 150 anos enters its final week at the CCBB Sao Paulo. The most comprehensive exhibition of the Uruguayan artist ever staged in Brazil brings together some 500 works and documents — paintings, rare manuscripts, maquettes, drawings and the celebrated wooden toys created by the Torres Garcia family. The show traces the arc from his early years in Montevideo and Barcelona through Paris and New York to the founding of the Taller Torres Garcia and the development of Universalismo Construtivo, the movement that urged Latin American artists to look south for their creative compass. The iconic America Invertida (1943) is a centrepiece. Curated by Saulo di Tarso in collaboration with the Museo Torres Garcia. Free. Closes March 9 — this is your last full weekend.

Ocupacao Maranhense: 20 Anos da Pequena Companhia de Teatro runs through April 20 with four theatrical productions, an exhibition in the Foyer and a lighting workshop. Performances are inspired by Kafka, Pessoa, Garcia Marquez and Borges. All events are free; tickets at bb.com.br/cultura or at the box office one hour before showtime.

Rua Alvares Penteado 112, Centro Historico. Daily 9h-20h except Tuesdays (closed). Free. Metro: Sao Bento (Line 1-Blue), 5-min walk.

04Getting AroundHow to move

Metro operates Sunday hours: Lines 1-Blue, 2-Green, 3-Red and 15-Silver run from 4h40 to midnight with standard weekend intervals. For the MASP, exit at Trianon-MASP (Line 2); for the CCBB, exit at Sao Bento (Line 1); for the Pinacoteca, Luz station (Line 1). CPTM commuter rail runs a reduced Sunday schedule.

Arena Barueri access: The stadium is located at Rua Gen. Tasso Fragoso 1, Barueri, approximately 25 km west of the city centre. By car, take the Rodovia Castelo Branco (SP-280) to the Barueri exit; expect heavy traffic from 18h on approach roads. There is no direct Metro connection — the closest station is Antonio Joao (CPTM Line 8, extended hours on match days), but a shuttle bus or ride-hailing from there is necessary. Plan to leave central Sao Paulo by 18h at the latest. Post-match congestion on the Castelo Branco is typically severe between 23h and midnight.

No rodizio: The vehicle plate restriction does not apply on Sundays or holidays. All plates circulate freely.

Ciclovia Paulista: The Avenida Paulista is closed to vehicles on Sundays (9h-17h), becoming a pedestrian and cycling boulevard ideal for combining with a visit to the MASP or Japan House.

05Where to EatWhere to eat

Paulista brunch: With the Avenida Paulista car-free until 17h, Sunday brunch along the boulevard is one of the city’s great rituals. Padaria Bella Paulista (R. Haddock Lobo 354) is open 24 hours with a full bakery counter. A Casa do Porco Bar (R. Araújo 124, Republica) serves one of the city’s most celebrated Sunday feasts, but book ahead.

Pre-match in Barueri: Options near the Arena Barueri are limited — plan to eat before leaving central Sao Paulo. The Pinheiros and Vila Madalena neighbourhoods offer abundant choices along the route to the Castelo Branco. Cervejaria Nacional (R. Coropé 116, Pinheiros) is a solid stop for chope and petiscos before heading west.

Centro Historico after the CCBB: The area around Praca do Patriarca and Rua Sao Bento has Sunday options including Bar da Dona Onca (Edificio Copan, Av. Ipiranga 200), which serves hearty comida brasileira and is open for lunch on Sundays.

06Practical InfoNeed to know

Arena Barueri ticketing: Palmeiras hold mando de campo. Tickets available through palmeiras.com.br and Palmeiras Avanti app. Torcida unica rules apply: only Palmeiras fans admitted in the main sections. Bring CPF and photo ID. Biometric facial recognition may be required at entry gates.

Dengue awareness: Sao Paulo remains under dengue alert as the rainy season continues. Apply repellent morning and evening, especially in parks and near green areas. Drain standing water at home.

Emergency: SAMU 192, Policia Militar 190, Bombeiros 193, Defesa Civil 199. SUS emergency network: Hospital das Clinicas (Cerqueira Cesar), Pronto-Socorro Municipal Dr. Carmino Caricchio (Tatuape).

Pharmacy: Drogasil, Droga Raia and Drogaria Sao Paulo branches across Paulista, Pinheiros and Jardins operate Sunday hours (typically 7h-22h).

07Community & LifestyleLocal life

Avenida Paulista car-free Sunday: From 9h to 17h the avenue is closed to vehicles, transforming Sao Paulo’s most iconic boulevard into a pedestrian promenade. Street musicians, food vendors, skaters and families fill the lanes between the MASP, Japan House, Instituto Moreira Salles and the Itau Cultural. A Sunday morning here is one of the best free experiences in the city.

Parque Ibirapuera: Open from 5h to midnight on Sundays. Runners, cyclists and families fill the paths from early morning. The park’s cultural institutions — the Oca, the Afro Brasil Emanoel Araujo museum and the Museu de Arte Contemporanea (MAC) — are all accessible from the main entrances on Av. Pedro Alvares Cabral.

Autumn begins: March 1 marks the official start of autumn in the Southern Hemisphere, though Sao Paulo’s real seasonal transition typically comes later in the month. Today’s 22°C high offers an early preview — noticeably cooler than the 30°C+ days of late February. Mornings start around 17°C. The week ahead rebounds to near-summer warmth by midweek.

08Game DayGame day

Paulistao semifinal: Palmeiras v Sao Paulo — 20h30, Arena Barueri. The Choque-Rei is a single-elimination match: the winner advances to the Paulistao final; a draw after 90 minutes goes straight to penalties with no extra time. Palmeiras have mando de campo as leaders of the first phase (19 points alongside Novorizontino) and arrive in strong form — four wins and a draw in their last five, plus a 3-1 victory over Sao Paulo in the group stage at this same venue (goals from Mauricio, Flaco Lopez and Khellven). Abel Ferreira fields a probable XI of Carlos Miguel; Khellven, Gustavo Gomez, Murilo, Piquerez; Marlon Freitas, Andreas Pereira, Mauricio; Allan, Flaco Lopez and Vitor Roque. Sao Paulo counter with quality and experience under Hernan Crespo: Rafael; Lucas Ramon, Arboleda, Sabino, Enzo Diaz; Bobadilla, Marcos Antonio, Danielzinho; Lucas Moura, Luciano and Calleri. Alan Franco is suspended for the Tricolor. Both teams are co-leaders of the Brasileirao with 10 points from four rounds. Transmissao: Record (TV aberta), TNT Sports, HBO Max, Caze TV (YouTube, free). Arbitragem: Daiane Muniz.

Novorizontino in the final. Last night in Novo Horizonte, the Tigre do Vale eliminated defending champions Corinthians 1-0 with a goal from lateral Mayk at 28 minutes of the second half. It is the first Paulistao final in the club’s history (founded 2010), recalling the original Gremio Esportivo Novorizontino’s run to the 1990 Final Caipira. Enderson Moreira’s side were the best team of the first phase and will now await tonight’s winner. The finals are scheduled for March 4 (quarta-feira) and March 8 (domingo). Corinthians, eliminated, return to action only on March 11 against Coritiba in the Brasileirao.

Brasileirao — Round 4 recap. Palmeiras and Sao Paulo lead the table on 10 points each after four rounds. Palmeiras beat Fluminense 2-1, Sao Paulo drew 0-0 with Athletico (Crespo rested starters for tonight). Corinthians drew 1-1 with Cruzeiro. Santos beat Vasco 2-1 (Neymar two goals). Round 5 resumes March 11-13: Corinthians v Coritiba (Mar 11, 21h30, Neo Quimica Arena), Sao Paulo v Goias (date TBC), Palmeiras v Fortaleza (date TBC).

Paulistao final dates: The final will be played over two legs on March 4 and March 8. Mando de campo for the decisive second leg depends on cumulative campaign points: if Sao Paulo advance, Novorizontino host the decider; if Palmeiras advance, home advantage in the second leg depends on the goal difference margin.

09Business & MarketsMarket watch

Ibovespa: Closed Friday at 188,786.98 (-1.16%), the worst session in weeks, triggered by the IPCA-15 reading of 0.84% for February — well above the 0.57% consensus. The index touched an intraday high of 191,005 before retreating sharply. For the week: -0.92%. For February: +4.09%. Year-to-date: +17.17%. The new all-time closing high of 191,490.40 was set on Tuesday February 24, the 13th record close of 2026.

Dollar: R$5.133 (-0.10% Friday). Weekly: -0.81%. February: -2.17%. Year-to-date: -6.46%. The real is at its strongest since late May 2024, sustained by foreign inflows now exceeding R$41.6 billion for the year (through February 25).

IPCA-15: February’s reading of 0.84% (vs 0.57% consensus) was driven by education costs (+5.20%, annual school-fee adjustments) and transport (airfares). The 12-month rate decelerated to 4.10% from 4.50% in January, but remained above the 3.82% forecast. The inflation target is 3.0% with a 1.5-point tolerance band.

Selic: Holds at 15.00%. The Copom meets March 17-18, with growing market expectations for the start of a rate-cutting cycle after the BC’s recent signalling. However, the hotter-than-expected IPCA-15 has cooled bets on an aggressive initial cut, with the DI curve repricing to reflect a more cautious trajectory.

Week ahead: Markets reopen Monday. Key events: Copom minutes analysis continues, B3 earnings season tail-end, and the start of US-Iran nuclear negotiations in Vienna. Political surveys showing a tightening presidential race ahead of 2026 elections remain a background factor.
