São Paulo Daily Brief for Monday, March 2, 2026

Welcome to your São Paulo daily brief for Monday, March 2, 2026. The first full working week of March opens with a cultural calendar in transition — the MASP is closed today but launches its Historias latino-americanas season on Friday with three solo shows by Sandra Gamarra Heshiki, Claudia Alarcon and La Chola Poblete, while the Pinacoteca opens Pascale Marthine Tayou’s Nocaute — the Cameroonian artist’s first Brazilian institutional show — on March 7 across seven galleries at Pina Luz. Today, the Pinacoteca is open (closed Tuesdays only), with Trabalho de Carnaval at Pina Contemporanea and the permanent collection at Pina Luz, and the Itau Cultural offers Game+Arte, its major videogame-as-culture exhibition, free on Avenida Paulista. At the Sesc 24 de Maio, the HIP-HOP 80sp exhibition enters its final four weeks before closing March 29 — over 3,000 pieces curated with OSGEMEOS and KL Jay. The CCBB Sao Paulo has Torres-Garcia at the centre of its programme. Temperatures hit a mild 23°C with just 5% rain chance, the Ibovespa opens March at 188,787 after Friday’s IPCA-15 sell-off, and the rodizio restricts plates ending in 1 and 2. This São Paulo daily brief covers culture, weather, transport, food, and everything you need for the day.

Monday in Sao Paulo is a mixed day for the institutional calendar — the MASP is closed, as is the Itau Cultural (opens Tuesday) — but the Pinacoteca operates normally (closed Tuesdays only), and the Sesc network is open. The real cultural story this week is what arrives on Friday and Saturday: the MASP opens three new exhibitions launching its year-long Historias latino-americanas programme, while the Pinacoteca debuts Pascale Marthine Tayou’s Nocaute and Macunaima e Duwid at Pina Estacao. Meanwhile, the HIP-HOP 80sp show at the Sesc 24 de Maio — one of the most popular exhibitions in the city this season — enters its final four weeks. This is the week to see it before the crowds.

07Community & LifestyleLocal life

The MASP’s Latin American turn. On Friday, the MASP launches its 2026 programme under the banner Historias latino-americanas — the latest in the museum’s thematic series that has previously addressed sexuality, feminism, the Afro-Atlantic, dance and ecology. The opening trio of Sandra Gamarra Heshiki, Claudia Alarcon with the Silat weavers, and La Chola Poblete sets the tone: Gamarra questions the neutrality of colonial representations, Alarcon reflects on memory through indigenous textiles, and La Chola Poblete mixes pop and pre-Columbian references. In April, Santiago Yahuarcani and Colectivo Acciones de Arte follow. In May, Damian Ortega receives a retrospective. The programme runs all year and culminates in a five-floor collective show in September.

Pinacoteca’s biggest opening of the year. Pascale Marthine Tayou’s Nocaute on March 7 is the Pinacoteca’s marquee event for the first half of 2026 — seven galleries at Pina Luz dedicated to one of Africa’s most prominent contemporary artists. On the same day, Cristina Salgado unveils her career-largest installation in the Octogono and Macunaima e Duwid opens at Pina Estacao, reinterpreting Mario de Andrade’s modernist classic from an indigenous perspective ahead of its centenary.

First full working week. Sao Paulo settles into the first standard Monday after the Carnaval-to-March transition. Schools and offices are at full capacity. Traffic on the marginais and the rodizio system are both in normal operation.

08Game DayGame day

Paulistao: No Sao Paulo-based Paulistao fixtures today. The state championship continues midweek.

Brasileirao Serie A Round 5: Resumes March 11-13. Key fixtures for SP clubs: Corinthians v Internacional (Mar 11), Palmeiras away to Vasco (Mar 12), Santos v Atletico-MG (Mar 13).

Elsewhere: In Rio, Flamengo v Madureira in the Cariocao semifinal volta tonight at 21h. Fluminense confirmed as the first Cariocao finalist after beating Vasco 1-1 (2-1 aggregate) last night.

09Business & MarketsMarket watch

Ibovespa: Closed Friday at 188,786.98 (-1.16%), triggered by the IPCA-15 reading of 0.84% — well above consensus. February: +4.09%. Year-to-date: +17.17%. All-time closing high of 191,490.40 was set February 24. Markets reopen today.

Dollar: R$5.1344 (-0.09% Friday). February: -2.17%. Year-to-date: -6.46%. The real is at its strongest since late May 2024, sustained by foreign inflows exceeding R$41.6 billion for the year.

Selic: 15.00% (held for five consecutive meetings). Copom meets March 17-18. The January communique explicitly signalled the start of rate cuts at the next meeting, with Focus consensus expecting a 0.50pp reduction to 14.50%. The IPCA-15 surprise at 0.84% may temper the pace but is unlikely to delay the first cut.

Week ahead: First full trading week of March. B3 earnings season tail-end, US-Iran nuclear negotiations, and reassessment of rate-cut timing. Political surveys ahead of the 2026 election remain a background factor.
