Ana Costa is one of the most accomplished singer-guitarists in the Rio de Janeiro samba circuit, known for a warm, clean tone and an interpretive authority that draws as much from choro and MPB as from samba de raiz. Nilze Carvalho began her career as a child prodigy on cavaquinho and bandolim, studied internationally, and has spent more than two decades as a mainstay of the Lapa circuit. The first of two shows at Blue Note Rio on Saturday belongs to Taryn — singer, actress, and voice actress — presenting “Elas Cantam Através de Mim”, a sweeping tribute to the women who defined what popular music could be. The programme traverses the catalogues of Billie Holiday, Nina Simone, Elis Regina, Janis Joplin, Rita Lee, and Tina Turner, alongside contemporary figures from the collective imagination. The songs are treated with fresh arrangements that update the originals without diminishing their emotional weight. Between musical sets, the show is held together by spoken texts drawn from Clarice Lispector and Anaïs Nin — the effect deepening the evening’s meditation on femininity, freedom, and vulnerability. It is a show on the generous side: wide in scope, explicitly theatrical, and positioned as part of the Blue Note’s third consecutive year of Mês das Mulheres programming under the artistic direction of Thais Bernardini. The late set at Blue Note Rio on Saturday belongs to Duda Brack and her project “Voz & Solidão” — a show that began during a period of social isolation and has since taken on a life of its own as one of the most intimate formats on the Rio de Janeiro music circuit. The format is deliberately minimal: voice and a single guitar, nothing more. The setlist is not fixed — Brack has said publicly that it shifts each night in response to which songs are resonating with her at the moment of performance, making each show a singular document. The project has been described as more confession than concert, and the late hour at the Blue Note, after the larger-scale Taryn show clears the room, suits it precisely. The Rio Scenarium — elected one of the ten best bars in the world by The Guardian and consistently rated the finest bar in Rio de Janeiro — opens its seven environments from 7 pm on Saturday nights, running until 3 am. Distributed across three floors of a nineteenth-century casarão on Rua do Lavradio, the house holds up to a thousand guests across indoor salões decorated with over ten thousand antique objects, a covered terrace, and open-air areas. Saturday is the Scenarium’s strongest night of the week: the programme typically mixes live samba on the Palco Scenarium with gafieira and forró, and the house DJs extend the night until closing.
