Monday night belongs to the Pedra · The birthplace of samba lights up in Saúde, Candlelight brings Queen and ABBA to Gávea, and the Samba do Trabalhador fills Andaraí from the afternoon
01 Tonight’s Vibe Menu
Monday night in Rio has a fixed address: the Pedra do Sal. In the Saúde neighbourhood, at the foot of the Morro da Conceição, the city’s most iconic open-air roda de samba fills the Largo João da Baiana from 7 pm to midnight — free, unscripted, and running for over twenty years. The stone steps that once served as the colonial salt depot now serve as the city’s living-room, with street vendors selling caipirinhas, acarajé, and cold Brahma in a crowd that mixes locals, tourists, and musicians from across the city’s samba circuit. In Gávea, the Candlelight series brings a string quartet to the Teatro das Artes inside the Shopping da Gávea — tonight’s programme pits Queen against ABBA in candlelit arrangements, with sessions at 7 pm and 9 pm. In Andaraí, the Samba do Trabalhador fills the Clube Renascença from 4:30 pm — Moacyr Luz and his house band play samba de raiz under the courtyard’s carambola tree until around 9 pm, making it the perfect warm-up before heading to the Pedra. In Lapa, Nova Capela keeps the cabrito roasting until 1 am. In Copacabana, Bip Bip may host a sidewalk roda if the regulars gather. Partly cloudy, 26°C, light rain possible. Bring a layer.

1Pedra do Sal — Roda de Samba
Samba de raiz
Monday night at the Pedra do Sal is the most authentic samba experience in Rio de Janeiro — and quite possibly in all of Brazil. In the Saúde neighbourhood, at the foot of the Morro da Conceição, the stone steps of the old colonial salt depot fill with hundreds of people every Monday from around 7 pm. The roda has been running for over two decades, organised by the Roda de Pedra group, and the setting is the Largo João da Baiana — named after the legendary sambista who played these streets a century ago. The site is a registered Quilombo Urbano (Fundação Cultural Palmares, 2005) and a tombado monument since 1984, marking the heart of Rio’s Pequena África, where enslaved Africans once disembarked at the nearby Cais do Valongo. Tonight, as every Monday, the samba is unscripted, the caipirinhas are R$15, the acarajé is fresh, and the atmosphere is electric. Arrive early for a good position on the steps. Uber or 99 to Largo São Francisco da Prainha, then walk.

2Candlelight: Queen vs. ABBA at Teatro das Artes
Classical crossover
The Candlelight concert series — produced by Fever, the global live-entertainment platform — brings its multi-sensory format to the Teatro das Artes inside the Shopping da Gávea. Tonight’s programme is “Queen vs. ABBA,” featuring a string quartet performing candlelit arrangements of both catalogues: expect “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “Dancing Queen,” “We Will Rock You,” and “Mamma Mia” reimagined for violin, viola, and cello. The Teatro das Artes, located on the second floor of the Shopping da Gávea in one of Rio’s most elegant residential neighbourhoods, provides an intimate 300-seat setting with strong acoustics. Two sessions tonight: 7 pm and 9 pm. Tickets are available exclusively through feverup.com or the Fever app — they cannot be purchased at the door. Seating is by order of arrival within your ticket category. Age 8+; under-16s must be accompanied by an adult.

3Samba do Trabalhador — Moacyr Luz at Clube Renascença
Samba de raiz
Since 2005, composer and singer Moacyr Luz has hosted the Samba do Trabalhador every Monday afternoon at the Clube Renascença in Andaraí — a Zona Norte institution that is itself one of Rio’s most important Black cultural spaces, founded in the late 1950s as a social club for the Afro-Brazilian community. The name was coined by composer Toninho Geraes as a joke: what kind of worker could attend a samba session at 4 pm on a Monday? The answer, it turned out, was everyone. The roda went from 40 people in its first weeks to over a thousand within months, and today draws guests like Zeca Pagodinho, Teresa Cristina, Leci Brandão, and João Bosco. Moacyr leads the house band — violão, cavaquinho, surdo, pandeiro, seven-string guitar — in a repertoire that mixes his own compositions with classics from the samba canon. The courtyard features a giant carambola tree, cold beer, and a sense of community that is difficult to replicate. Doors at 4:30 pm, music from 5 pm, Moacyr from 7 pm. Entry around R$30 via Sympla. Metro Andaraí or ride-hail.

4Nova Capela — Patrimônio Cultural Carioca
Lapa heritage
Open since 1903, Nova Capela is a designated Patrimônio Cultural Carioca — a living relic of Lapa’s golden age, when the neighbourhood was the city’s bohemian epicentre. The house speciality is the cabrito assado (roast kid goat), served on heavy ceramic plates with rice and farofa, the same recipe that has drawn writers, musicians, and politicians for over a century. The bar runs the length of the ground floor, with marble-topped tables, dark wood, and the pleasant hum of a Lapa institution that refuses to close. On Monday nights, the atmosphere is calm but present: the kitchen runs full service until closing, the chopp is well-poured, and the crowd is neighbourhood locals, journalists, and the occasional tourist who found the right street. No live music, no cover — just the sound of conversation and ice in glasses. Open until 1 am on Mondays (until 2 am Friday–Sunday). Cash and card accepted.

5Bip Bip — Sidewalk Roda in Copacabana
Choro · Samba
Bip Bip is not a venue — it is a state of mind. The tiny botequim on Rua Almirante Gonçalves, a block off the Copacabana beachfront, has been a pilgrimage site for samba, choro, and bossa nova since the 1960s. There is no stage, no microphone, no cover charge, and no guarantee that music will happen on any given night. What happens is this: if the regulars show up, instruments appear, and the roda begins on the sidewalk. Monday is not the strongest night — that honour belongs to Tuesday and Sunday — but the Bip Bip has surprised people for decades. The house rules are sacred: snap your fingers, do not clap; do not talk over the music; do not order at the bar during the roda. A cold Brahma from the cooler is R$10. Cash or PIX. If the door is open and you hear music, pull up a stool.

04 Suggested Route One way to play it
1
4:30 pm — Samba do Trabalhador at Clube Renascença
Start the afternoon in Andaraí. The Clube Renascença opens at 4:30 pm — grab a spot near the courtyard stage, order a cold beer, and settle in for Moacyr Luz’s samba de raiz. R. Barão de São Francisco, 54 — Metro Andaraí. The roda ends around 9 pm, leaving time to head south.
2
8 pm — Pedra do Sal for the main event
From Andaraí to Saúde is a 20-minute ride via Uber or 99. The roda is building by 8 pm, and the steps are filling. Arrive with cash for the street vendors. Set “Largo São Francisco da Prainha” as your drop-off point, then walk to the stone.
3
10:30 pm — Nova Capela for the nightcap
When the Pedra starts to thin, ride to Lapa for supper. Nova Capela is open until 1 am on Mondays. Cabrito assado, a cold Brahma, and the slow hum of a Monday in Lapa. The 123-year-old Patrimônio Cultural Carioca at Av. Mem de Sá, 96.
4
Alternative: 7 pm — Candlelight at Teatro das Artes
If you want a different Monday, skip Lapa and head to Gávea for the 7 pm Candlelight session. Queen vs. ABBA, candlelit string quartet, Shopping da Gávea. Dinner at the mall’s restaurants before or after. Then Uber to Pedra do Sal for the second half of the roda.
05 Still Going After 22h Late night
Monday is the quietest night of the week in Rio, but the Pedra do Sal keeps the energy through midnight, and Lapa holds its ground. Nova Capela (Av. Mem de Sá, 96) keeps the kitchen firing until 1 am on Mondays, and the cabrito is always available. In Copacabana, Bip Bip closes when the music stops — which could be 10 pm or midnight. The boardwalk kiosks along Copacabana and Ipanema stay open late and are a reliable default. Rua Dias Ferreira in Leblon has a handful of bars and restaurants open until midnight on Mondays. The Blue Note Rio is typically closed on Mondays — the venue reopens Tuesday for happy hour from 5 pm.
