The standout show of Friday. Daíra presents “Canta Belchior — 80 Anos | 10 Anos de Amar e Mudar as Coisas”, a doubly celebratory evening marking both the 80th birth year of Belchior — one of the great poets of the Brazilian canção — and the tenth anniversary of her landmark album of Belchior interpretations. Daíra Sabóia, a native of Niterói, has been described by Elba Ramalho as the finest interpreter of Belchior of her generation; the album “Amar e Mudar as Coisas”, recorded in 2016 in the Serra do Rio de Janeiro and released on Selo Porangareté, sold out the Teatro Rival on its first outing and has toured Brazil continuously since. Tonight’s programme draws from across Belchior’s catalogue — “Alucinação”, “Coração Selvagem”, and “Princesa do Meu Lugar” are among the confirmed titles, alongside other standards that have come to define this project. The Blue Note Rio, managed by Luiz Calainho at Av. Atlântica, 1910, is the first Blue Note franchise in the Southern Hemisphere and the only one in the world with a direct sea view. The Carioca da Gema’s Semana da Mulher enters its fourth and penultimate night with Flavia Saolli on the Av. Mem de Sá stage. The full week runs from Tuesday March 3 through Saturday March 7, with a different singer each night — Alana Valentte opened on Tuesday, Vanessa Ebons played Wednesday, Dani Coimbra took Thursday, and tonight Flavia Saolli headlines the Friday slot. The programme closes on Saturday with Ana Costa and Nilze Carvalho, two artists whose ties to the Carioca da Gema stretch back to the house’s founding. Flavia Saolli is one of the most lauded voices of the new generation of MPB, known for a warm tone and interpretive depth that suits the Carioca da Gema stage well. The Friday format runs three acts: doors open at 7:30 pm, the regular voz e violão opener by guitarist Gabriel Versiani runs from 8:30 pm to roughly 9:30 pm, and the main show begins at 10 pm. The late set at Blue Note Rio belongs to Julia Landen and her project “Jazz é Pop! — Especial Mulheres”, a special edition of the ongoing series dedicated to the protagonism of women in music. The set gathers songs composed by women, associated with female voices, or centred on the female experience — drawing from pop, rock, and MPB — and transforms them into original jazzístic rereadings. Julia Landen’s approach in this project is genuinely hybrid: she treats the jazz idiom not as a museum but as a living language, capable of absorbing and renewing contemporary songs while keeping the emotional weight intact. The “Especial Mulheres” edition is framed as a contribution to the Blue Note’s Mês das Mulheres, and is the second of two shows on the night. The Rio Scenarium — elected one of the ten best bars in the world by The Guardian and consistently rated the finest bar in Rio de Janeiro — opens its seven environments from 7 pm on Friday nights, running until 2 am. Distributed across three floors of a nineteenth-century casarão on Rua do Lavradio, the house holds up to a thousand guests across indoor salões decorated with over ten thousand antique objects, a covered terrace, and open-air areas. Friday is the Scenarium’s most reliable night of the week: the programme typically mixes live samba on the Palco Scenarium with gafieira and forró, and the house DJs extend the night until closing. Founded in 2005 by Márcio Pacheco in a former beverage warehouse on Rua Joaquim Silva, the Beco do Rato is one of the Lapa circuit’s most consistent addresses for live samba — open seven days a week, with music every night. The house is divided into three areas: an indoor salão decorated with murals of samba legends including Pixinguinha and Noel Rosa, a covered terrace, and an open-air courtyard. Friday nights are livelier than midweek, the kitchen stays open, the chope flows freely, and the house band draws a local crowd. The menu runs from pastéis de angu to caipirinhas.
