Rio de Janeiro Daily Brief for Tuesday, March 3, 2026

Welcome to your Rio de Janeiro daily brief for Tuesday, March 3, 2026. It is free-admission Tuesday at the Museu de Arte do Rio, five days before the museum opens its most anticipated show of the year: the itinerant edition of the 36th Bienal de Sao Paulo, curated by Keyna Eleison. The MAR, which turned 13 on March 1, is also offering free Saturdays throughout the month. The CCBB is closed today (its weekly day off), but the Centro Cultural Correios reopens for the week with two exhibitions entering their final 11 days: Aruane Garzedin’s urban meditation and Liane Roditi’s body-and-memory installation, both closing March 14. In Botafogo, Portas Vilaseca Galeria opens its doors today, and in Ipanema, Nara Roesler continues its weekday hours. The cultural story of the day, however, is what happened last night: Flamengo demolished Madureira 8-0 at the Maracana to advance 11-0 on aggregate, only for the club to dismiss Filipe Luis hours later in one of the most dramatic coaching decisions in Cariocao history. The Fla-Flu final is confirmed for Sunday March 8 at 18h. In 15 days, the Golden Globe Tribute Awards gala arrives at the Copacabana Palace. The temperature holds at 26°C with just a 15% chance of rain, and the Ibovespa closed Monday at 189,307 amid geopolitical volatility after the US-Israel strikes on Iran. This Rio de Janeiro daily brief covers culture, weather, transport, food, and everything you need for the day.

03What to See & DoWhat to see & do

Museu de Arte do Rio (MAR) — Free Admission Today

Tuesday is the MAR’s weekly free-admission day — the best day of the week to visit Rio’s flagship art museum. The MAR turned 13 on March 1 and has welcomed over five million visitors since 2013. Current exhibitions include the Olu Oguibe facade installation, which has occupied the museum’s exterior since the opening of the 36th Bienal de Sao Paulo in September 2025. On Saturday March 7, the MAR opens the itinerant edition of the Bienal, curated by Keyna Eleison, featuring works by 20 artists including Maxwell Alexandre, Myrlande Constant, Ming Smith and Nadia Taquary. The show runs through May 3. Two further openings follow this month: Guilhermina Augusti’s first institutional solo show on March 14 and No Martins on March 28. The museum is also offering free entry on all Saturdays in March to mark its anniversary.

Praca Maua 5, Centro. Tue-Sun 11h-18h (last entry 17h). Closed Wednesdays. Free today (Tuesdays). R$20/R$10 other days. VLT: Parada dos Museus.

Centro Cultural Correios — Closing Soon

Two exhibitions in their final 11 days. Aruane Garzedin’s Ha quanto tempo nao olho para o ceu? presents approximately 20 works exploring the relationship between body, space and time in the urban environment, curated by Shannon Botelho. Liane Roditi’s Dobras e Desdobras brings 40 works investigating body, memory and matter through performance, video, sculpture and installation, curated by Isabel Sanson Portella. Both shows close March 14. The Correios was closed yesterday (Monday) but reopens today through Saturday.

Rua Visconde de Itaborai 20, Centro. Tue-Sat 12h-19h. Free. Metro: Uruguaiana (Line 1).

Museu do Amanha

Santiago Calatrava’s science museum on Praca Maua is open today. The Museu do Amanha no longer offers free Tuesdays — since April 2025, free admission is limited to national holidays. Standard tickets are R$40 (inteira) or R$20 (meia-entrada). On every 10th of the month, tickets are R$10 to mark the museum’s anniversary. The permanent exhibition explores five themes — Cosmos, Terra, Antropoceno, Amanhas and Nos — through immersive multimedia and interactive installations. Combine with the MAR across Praca Maua for a full morning in the museum district.

Praca Maua 1, Centro. Thu-Tue 10h-18h (last entry 17h). Closed Wednesdays. R$40/R$20. VLT: Parada dos Museus.

04Getting AroundHow to move

Metro Rio operates standard weekday hours: Lines 1 and 2 run from 5h to midnight. For the MAR and Museu do Amanha, take the VLT to Parada dos Museus. For Centro Cultural Correios and A Gentil Carioca, Metro Uruguaiana (Line 1) is closest. For galleries in Ipanema, General Osorio is the nearest station. SuperVia suburban trains run a normal weekday timetable.

VLT Carioca: The light rail is the most practical way to reach the Praca Maua museum district. Line 1 connects Santos Dumont airport and the Centro business district to Parada dos Museus. Single fare R$5.00. Services run approximately every 6-8 minutes during peak hours.

No major event traffic tonight. After last night’s Maracana match, there is no scheduled evening fixture at the stadium today. Road conditions in the Zona Norte and Zona Sul should be normal for a weekday evening.

Cycling: The ciclovia network along Copacabana, Ipanema and Lagoa operates normally. The Aterro do Flamengo is open to traffic today (car-free Sundays only).

05Where to EatWhere to eat

Praca Maua after the museums: A morning combining the MAR and the Museu do Amanha leaves you perfectly placed for lunch in Centro. The Travessa do Comercio behind the CCBB (which is closed today, but the restaurants are open) and the Arco do Teles precinct offer a range of bars and restaurants with weekday lunch energy. Confeitaria Colombo (Rua Goncalves Dias 32) is a short walk south for a more formal setting.

After the Correios: The area around the Centro Cultural Correios on Rua Visconde de Itaborai is well served by Centro’s weekday lunch scene — small restaurants, padarias and juice bars within a short walk of Uruguaiana station.

Zona Sul evening: With no major event traffic tonight, the Zona Sul restaurant scene is at its relaxed weekday best. Talho Capixaba (Av. Ataulfo de Paiva 1022, Leblon) remains a reliable choice, and the Rua Dias Ferreira corridor in Leblon offers everything from contemporary Brazilian to Japanese. In Botafogo, the restaurants near Portas Vilaseca on Rua Dona Mariana are within easy walking distance of the gallery.

06Practical InfoNeed to know

MAR free Tuesday tip: Free-admission Tuesdays at the MAR draw larger crowds than regular weekdays. Bilheteria opens at 10h; last entry is at 17h. Visitors are required to leave bags, backpacks and large items in the locker room. The rooftop terrace offers panoramic views of Praca Maua and the Museu do Amanha and is accessible even without entering the exhibition galleries.

Museu do Amanha ticketing: Since April 2025, free Tuesdays have been discontinued. Tickets (R$40/R$20) can be purchased online via the museum’s website or at the bilheteria. Advance booking is recommended to secure a timed slot.

Dengue awareness: Rio remains under heightened dengue alert. Apply repellent in the morning and evening, especially if visiting parks or the Aterro do Flamengo. Avoid standing water near your home.

Emergency: SAMU 192, Policia Militar 190, Bombeiros 193, Civil Defence 199. SUS emergency network: Hospital Municipal Souza Aguiar (Centro), Hospital Municipal Miguel Couto (Gavea).

07Community & LifestyleLocal life

The MAR at 13. The Museu de Arte do Rio celebrated its 13th anniversary on March 1, having welcomed more than five million visitors and staged 107 exhibition openings since 2013. The museum, installed in the Palacete Dom Joao VI and its modernist neighbour on Praca Maua, has become a central symbol of the revitalisation of the Porto Maravilha district and one of Rio’s most important cultural institutions. Its 2026 season opens with three major shows: the 36th Bienal de Sao Paulo itinerant edition (March 7), Guilhermina Augusti’s first institutional solo (March 14), and No Martins (March 28). Free Saturdays throughout March and free Tuesdays year-round.

Golden Globe Tribute countdown. In 15 days, the Copacabana Palace hosts the inaugural Golden Globe Tribute Awards — the first time the Golden Globes franchise has staged an official event in Brazil. Announced in December 2025 at the MAM, the black-tie gala on March 18 will honour Brazilian artists and creators whose work has reached international audiences, with 350 guests expected. The Prefeitura has signed a three-year partnership, positioning Rio as the Latin American seat of the franchise. The TV Globo is the event’s media partner.

First full working week, day two. Rio is settling into the first standard working week after the Carnaval-to-March stretch. Schools and offices are at full capacity. The cultural calendar this week is unusually rich: MAR free today, MAM free Wednesday, CCBB open Wednesday through Monday, Correios closing shows Tue-Sat, and the Bienal opening at the MAR on Saturday.

08Game DayGame day

Last night: Flamengo 8-0 Madureira (11-0 on aggregate). Flamengo demolished Madureira in one of the most lopsided semifinal results in Cariocao history. Pedro scored four goals to end a four-match drought, Paqueta added two, Jean Vianna scored an own goal, and Samuel Lino completed the rout. The match was effectively over before half-time: Wallace Camilo received a straight red card for a foul on De La Cruz in the 29th minute, and the Rubro-Negro scored at will from that point. Attendance: 25,277 at the Maracana.

Filipe Luis dismissed. In a dramatic turn, the Flamengo board dismissed manager Filipe Luis in the early hours of Tuesday morning — hours after the 8-0 victory. Director Jose Boto communicated the decision after the post-match press conference. The dismissal follows defeats in the Supercopa do Brasil final (v Corinthians) and the Recopa Sul-Americana final (v Lanus). Portuguese coach Leonardo Jardim, formerly of Cruzeiro and Monaco, is the leading candidate to replace him, with the club hoping to appoint a successor before Sunday’s final.

Cariocao final confirmed: Fluminense v Flamengo. Sunday, March 8, 18h, Maracana. Single match, no aggregate advantage. Penalties if drawn after 90 minutes. Flamengo are seeking their 40th state title and a seventh tricampeonato. Ticket details via flamengo.com.br and fluminense.com.br.

Brasileirao Round 5: Resumes March 11-13. Flamengo v Cruzeiro (Mar 11, 21h30, Maracana), Vasco v Palmeiras (Mar 12, 19h30, Sao Januario), Remo v Fluminense (Mar 12, 19h, Mangueirão).

09Business & MarketsMarket watch

Ibovespa: Closed Monday at 189,307.02 (+0.28%), recovering from early losses in a volatile session driven by the US-Israel military strikes on Iran and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. Petrobras PN surged 4.58% and PRIO gained 5.12% on the back of Brent crude’s 8.71% jump. Volume: R$22.8 billion. February: +4.09%. Year-to-date: +17.45%. All-time closing high: 191,490.40 (February 24).

Dollar: R$5.1659 (+0.62% Monday), after touching R$5.2145 intraday on geopolitical risk. The real pared most of its losses by the close. Year-to-date: approx. -6%.

Selic: 15.00%. Copom meets March 17-18. The Boletim Focus released Monday maintained the IPCA 2026 forecast at 3.91% and lowered the Selic year-end projection to 12.00%. However, the oil-price shock from the Strait of Hormuz closure has raised questions about the pace of rate cuts. Options on the B3 reduced the probability of a 50bp cut at the March meeting to 74%, down from higher levels before the conflict.

Week ahead: Markets reopen today with continued geopolitical risk from the Iran conflict, oil-price volatility and the tail end of B3 earnings season. Petrobras and Embraer report this week. Political surveys ahead of the 2026 election remain a background factor.
