Rio de Janeiro Daily Brief for Thursday, February 26, 2026

Welcome to your Rio de Janeiro daily brief for Thursday, February 26, 2026 — a rare day when all four of Rio’s major museums are open simultaneously. The MAR reopens after its Wednesday closure, joining the CCBB (Vetores-Vertentes: 170 works by Amazonian women photographers, free), MAM (Daniel Buren’s first Brazilian installation, free) and the Museu do Amanhã (R$30) for what may be the strongest cultural lineup of the week. Plan a Centro-to-Flamengo circuit while the institutions align — the CCBB and A Gentil Carioca gallery are a five-minute walk apart, and the VLT connects Praça Mauá to both the MAR and Museu do Amanhã. The weather turns less cooperative: 28°C with 65% rain, a notable shift from yesterday’s dry 29°C window, so indoor plans are wise. On the markets, the Ibovespa touched a new intraday record of 192,623 points yesterday — its first time above 192k — before closing at 191,247 (-0.13%). The dollar fell further to R$5.1247, its lowest since May 2024. Tonight the Maracanã hosts the Recopa Sul-Americana final second leg (Flamengo v Lanús, 21h30), which will affect transport across Zona Norte from 18h. This Rio de Janeiro daily brief covers weather, events, transport, food, and practical tips for your day.

Weather tip: Thursday brings a marked change from yesterday’s dry spell — 28°C with 65% rain chance means showers are likely, especially in the afternoon and evening. If you’re heading to the Maracanã tonight, bring a light rain jacket. Friday is worse at 95% rain and just 26°C, so plan indoor activities. The weekend looks better: Saturday drops to 25% and Sunday is manageable at 35% for the Cariocão semifinal. For today, museums are the smart call — save outdoor plans for the morning if the rain holds off.

Thursday is an exceptional museum day in Rio: all four of the city’s major institutions are open simultaneously. The MAR returns from its Wednesday closure to join the CCBB, MAM and Museu do Amanhã — a rare alignment that makes today ideal for a cultural circuit through Centro and Flamengo. The CCBB’s Vetores-Vertentes show (Amazonian women photographers, through March 30) and Daniel Buren’s first Brazilian installation at the MAM are both free. The weather is less cooperative than yesterday — 65% rain at 28°C — so indoor plans are wise. Casa Museu Eva Klabin in Lagoa and A Gentil Carioca in Centro are also open. This evening, the city’s energy shifts entirely to football: the Maracanã hosts the Recopa final from 21h30, while Plebe Rude plays Circo Voador tomorrow night for those looking ahead to the weekend.

Flamengo v Lanús — Thu 26 Feb, 21h30, Maracanã
Recopa Sul-Americana final, second leg. Lanús won the ida 1-0 in Buenos Aires (Rodrigo Castillo 31’/2T). Plata returns from suspension and could start over Cebolinha. Saul Ñíguez is the only confirmed absentee; Jorginho may return to the squad. Lanús probable XI: Losada; Guidara, Izquierdoz, Canale, Marcich; Medina, Cardozo, Moreno; Salvio, Walter Bou, Carrera. No confirmed absences (Loaiza doubtful). Referee: Gustavo Tejera (URU). VAR: Andrés Cunha (URU). TV: ESPN / Disney+. Biometria facial required for entry. Over 60,000 tickets sold.

Last night’s Brasileirão results: Palmeiras beat Fluminense 2-1 at Arena Barueri (Vitor Roque pen., Allan; Lucho Acosta) to go top with 10 points. São Paulo won 1-0 at Coritiba (Cauly pen.) to match them on 10 points. Grêmio beat Atlético-MG 2-1 (Noriega, Marlon; Victor Hugo) after Natanael was sent off in the 16th minute. Cruzeiro drew 1-1 with Corinthians (Matheus Pereira; João Pedro Tchoca). Both Bragantino v Athletico-PR and Remo v Internacional finished 1-1. Tonight, Santos host Vasco at Vila Belmiro (19h) — both on just 1 point from 3 games. 09Business & MarketsMarket watch

Ibovespa: closed Wednesday at 191,247.46 (-0.13%) after touching a new intraday record of 192,623 — its first time above 192k. The index defended the 191k level on a session of profit-taking after 13 record closes in 2026. Volume: R$28.1 billion
USD/BRL: R$5.1247 (-0.60%) — lowest closing price since May 21, 2024. Fifth consecutive daily decline. YTD drop: -6.64%. Strong foreign inflows and a weakening dollar globally continue to support the real
Wednesday movers: Vale led the blue chips higher for a fifth straight session. Retail stocks fell — Pão de Açúcar -2.24%, Assaí -4.39% after GPA reported a Q4 loss exceeding R$500m. Petrobras was flat after hitting its own all-time high on Tuesday
US tariffs: Trump’s 10% global tariff under Section 122 remains in effect (day 2). No sign yet of the threatened increase to 15%. The 150-day statutory clock is running. Nvidia reported Q4 earnings after the close in New York yesterday — watch for AI-sector spillover on B3 today
Selic: 15.00%. Copom next meets March 18–19. Foreign inflows into B3 equities: R$35.6 billion YTD through Feb 20. Atlas/Bloomberg poll: Flavio Bolsonaro and Lula tied in a 2nd-round simulation (46.3% v 46.2%), supporting risk appetite

Market context: The Ibovespa paused for breath after eight sessions of gains in nine, but the pullback was negligible — just -0.13%. The index remains driven by a historic wave of foreign capital rotating out of US tech and into emerging markets. The BCB confirmed the February foreign exchange flow is positive by US$3.36 billion through Feb 20, with US$8.4 billion flowing in this year. Analysts continue to eye the 200k target. Tonight’s Nvidia earnings are the next catalyst — results landed after the NY close yesterday, and the market reaction could set the tone for today’s B3 session.

10Plan AheadPlan ahead

The Week Ahead
Fri Feb 27 — Plebe Rude at Circo Voador (Lapa, 20h) — 45 years of Brasília punk. Frestas Trienal de Artes opens at Sesc Sorocaba (80+ artists)
Sat Feb 28 — CCBB Educativo: mini bloco Breque no Piripaque (14h, CCBB foyer) — Carnaval-themed children’s parade
Sun Mar 1 — Cariocão semifinal volta: Fluminense v Vasco (Maracanã, 18h). Flu lead 1-0. Grêmio v Internacional (Gauchão final, Arena do Grêmio, 18h)
Mon Mar 2 — Cariocão semifinal volta: Madureira v Flamengo (Maracanã, 21h). Fla lead 3-0
Looking further — Vetores-Vertentes at CCBB runs through March 30. Copom meets March 18–19 (Selic decision). Uma história da arte brasileira opens at MAM Bahia, March 10. Cariocão final TBC by FERJ
Looking ahead: Tonight is the headline event of the week and arguably the most important match of Flamengo’s 2026 season so far. The Maracanã under lights for a continental final with a 0-1 deficit adds genuine jeopardy — Filipe Luís needs his strongest XI and the crowd to engineer the comeback. Bars across Zona Sul and Centro will be packed from 20h. Tomorrow, Plebe Rude brings Brasília punk to Circo Voador for their 45th anniversary tour. The Cariocão semifinal volta matches next weekend will determine whether the final is the expected Flamengo v Fluminense or if Vasco or Madureira can produce a shock. On the markets, all eyes are on the reaction to Nvidia’s Q4 earnings (reported last night in NY) and whether Trump signs the order to raise tariffs from 10% to 15% — both could set the tone for the Ibovespa’s run at 200k.
