Rio de Janeiro Daily Brief for Sunday, March 1, 2026

Welcome to your Rio de Janeiro daily brief for Sunday, March 1, 2026 — the first day of autumn and the day Rio decides a Cariocão finalist. The temperature holds at 26°C with a 25% chance of rain, and the city’s attention is on the Maracanã: Fluminense host Vasco at 18h in the second leg of the Campeonato Carioca semifinal, with Flu protecting a 1-0 advantage from the ida. A draw is enough for the Tricolor; Vasco, now under interim manager Bruno Lazaroni after the dismissal of Fernando Diniz, need to win by two clear goals or force penalties with a one-goal victory. The cultural calendar is strong across Centro and Flamengo: the CCBB has two major exhibitions open (Viva Mauricio and Vetores-Vertentes, both free), while the MAM offers three shows including Daniel Buren’s Voile/Toile and the Carmen Portinho retrospective. The markets closed Friday with the Ibovespa at 188,787 (-1.16%) after a hotter-than-expected IPCA-15, though the index still posted a 4.09% gain for February. This Rio de Janeiro daily brief covers weather, culture, transport, food, and everything you need for the day.

From mid-afternoon, the energy shifts north to the Maracanã for the most anticipated match of the Cariocão season: a semifinal volta between two clubs with 400 years of combined history and a rivalry that never cools. 03What to See & DoWhat to see & do

CCBB Rio de Janeiro

Viva Mauricio — Mauricio de Sousa, a Experiencia Imersiva occupies the ground floor and first floor of the CCBB with a free, immersive walk through the universe of Brazil’s most beloved comics creator. Visitors pass through recreated scenes from the Bairro do Limoeiro — the animated houses of Monica, Cebolinha, Magali and Cascao — then through Chico Bento’s rural world, the Penadinho cemetery, the Astronauta’s spaceship and the Louco’s house. The show celebrates multiple generations of characters and connects to the CCBB Library on the fifth floor, where the Turma da Monica comic archive is on display. Curated by Sidney Gusman, Marcelo Jackow and MSP Estudios. In its final weeks — closes April 13. Book via bb.com.br/cultura; last timed entry at 17h, untimed tickets from 9h daily.

Vetores-Vertentes: Fotografas do Para presents the work of 11 women photographers from the Amazon, spanning three generations from the 1970s to today. The show features over 160 works — photographs, videos, installations, documents and visual experiments — exploring identity, territory, memory, ancestrality and resistance. Curated by the Museu das Mulheres, it incorporates VR headsets and aromatic installations for a sensory experience. First floor, free, through March 30.

Rua Primeiro de Marco 66, Centro. Wed-Mon 9h-20h. Closed Tuesdays. Free. Metro: Uruguaiana (Line 1).

MAM Rio — Museu de Arte Moderna

Daniel Buren: Voile/Toile — Toile/Voile is the first Brazilian edition of the French artist’s landmark project, begun in 1975, which transforms boat sails into works of art. In January, eleven Optimist sailboats fitted with Buren’s iconic vertical stripes performed a regatta across Guanabara Bay from the Marina da Gloria. The sails now hang in the MAM foyer, arranged in the order the boats finished — a protocol Buren has maintained for fifty years across editions in Geneva, Lucerne, Miami and Minneapolis. Through April 12.

Carmen Portinho: Modernidade em Construcao traces the career of a pioneer of Brazilian modernism — engineer, urbanist, feminist activist and museum director. Through March 15 (final days). Curated by Aline Siqueira, Pablo Lafuente and Raquel Barreto.

100 Anos de Arte: Gilberto Chateaubriand narrates a century of Brazilian art through the lens of one of the country’s greatest collectors, who assembled over 6,400 works now held at the MAM. Curated by Pablo Lafuente and Raquel Barreto. Through June 7.

Av. Infante Dom Henrique 85, Parque do Flamengo. Wed-Sun 10h-18h. R$30/R$15 meia. Free on Wednesdays. Metro: Cinelandia (Line 1) + 10-min walk, or bus to Aterro.

Also Open Today

Museu de Arte do Rio (MAR) — Between major exhibitions; the itinerant show of the 36th Bienal de Sao Paulo opens March 7, curated by Keyna Eleison. The permanent collection and Escola do Olhar remain open. Praca Maua, Centro. Tue-Sun 11h-18h (closed Wednesdays). R$20/R$10 meia, free on Tuesdays.

Museu do Amanha — The science museum designed by Santiago Calatrava on Praca Maua. Tue-Sun 10h-18h. R$30/R$15 meia, free on Tuesdays.

CCBB Library (5th floor) — Connected to the Viva Mauricio exhibition, the library hosts an extended display of Turma da Monica comics and archival material. Free with CCBB entry.

04Getting AroundHow to move

Metro Rio operates Sunday hours: Line 1 (General Osorio–Uruguaiana) and Line 2 (Pavuna–Botafogo) run from 7h to 23h with extended intervals. For the CCBB, exit at Uruguaiana; for the MAM and Aterro do Flamengo, Cinelandia or Largo do Machado are closest. For the Maracanã, exit at Maracana station (Line 2) — trains will be crowded from 16h onward. SuperVia suburban trains run a reduced Sunday timetable.

Maracanã traffic: With the Flu v Vasco semifinal at 18h, expect significant congestion from 16h on the Radial Oeste, Rua Sao Francisco Xavier, Av. Maracana and Linha Amarela approaches. Plan to arrive by 16h30 if driving, or take the Metro to Maracana station and walk. Post-match traffic will be heavy until around 21h. Ride-hailing surges are likely between 19h30 and 21h.

Ciclovia: The ciclovia network along the Aterro do Flamengo, Copacabana, Ipanema and Lagoa operates as usual on Sundays. The Aterro is car-free on Sundays, ideal for cycling and running between the MAM and Botafogo.

05Where to EatWhere to eat

Pre-match at Maracanã: The classic move for a 18h kick-off is a late lunch at the botecos along Rua Sao Francisco Xavier and Rua Professor Eurico Rabelo. Arrive by 14h30 to eat without rush, then walk to the stadium. Espeto de picanha and chopp are the ritual. Adega Portugália (R. Barão de Mesquita 27, Tijuca) is a solid sit-down option if you want a fuller meal before the game.

Centro after museums: The Travessa do Comercio (behind the CCBB) is open on Sundays with bars and restaurants in the Arco do Teles precinct. Bar do Mineiro in Santa Teresa (Rua Paschoal Carlos Magno 99) is a perennial favourite for feijoada on Sundays.

Zona Sul brunch: If the morning is for the beach or Lagoa before the game, Talho Capixaba (Av. Ataulfo de Paiva 1022, Leblon) serves one of the city’s most popular Sunday brunch spreads from 7h.

06Practical InfoNeed to know

Maracanã ticketing: The Flu v Vasco semifinal is a Fluminense home match, with the club managing ticket sales through fluminense.com.br and bilheteria digital. Torcida unica rules apply — only Fluminense fans are admitted. Bring your CPF and a valid photo ID. Biometric facial recognition is required for entry.

Dengue awareness: Rio remains under heightened dengue alert. Apply repellent in the morning and evening, especially if visiting the Aterro do Flamengo or Lagoa. Avoid standing water near your home.

Emergency: SAMU 192, Policia Militar 190, Bombeiros 193, Civil Defence 199. SUS emergency network: Hospital Municipal Souza Aguiar (Centro), Hospital Municipal Miguel Couto (Gavea).

Pharmacy: Drogaria Pacheco and Drogasil branches in Copacabana, Botafogo and Tijuca operate extended Sunday hours (typically 7h-22h).

07Community & LifestyleLocal life

Aterro do Flamengo car-free Sunday: The Aterro is closed to vehicles on Sundays, turning the entire park into a pedestrian and cycling corridor from the MAM to Botafogo. Runners, skaters and families fill the lanes from early morning. The MAM itself sits at the northern edge, making it an ideal starting point for a cultural morning followed by an active afternoon.

Feira da Gloria: The weekly Feira da Gloria on Rua do Russel operates on Sundays (8h-14h) with organic produce, artisan breads, honey and jams. A good stop between breakfast and the museum circuit in Centro or Flamengo.

Autumn begins: Despite the calendar turning to March and the official start of autumn, Rio’s temperatures remain firmly in summer territory. The real shift typically comes in April. For now, expect warm mornings, occasional late-afternoon showers and sunsets around 18h15.

08Game DayGame day

Cariocão semifinal volta: Fluminense v Vasco — 18h, Maracanã. The Tricolor de Laranjeiras hold a 1-0 lead from the ida at the Nilton Santos and return to their fortress needing only a draw to reach the final. Vasco must win by two or more to advance directly, or by one goal to force penalties. Fluminense have the best campaign in the 2026 Cariocão: seven wins in eight matches, with 18 goals scored and just 10 conceded across 12 games this season. Coach Luis Zubeldia is suspended for this match; Facundo Bernal is also out through suspension and injury (30-day layoff). Canobbio returns to the starting lineup. The Vasco side arrive under interim manager Bruno Lazaroni, who replaced Fernando Diniz after the ida defeat. The Cruzmaltinos are winless in their last three and sit bottom of the Brasileirão after four rounds. Transmissao: Globo (TV aberta — RJ only), SporTV, Premiere, GETV.

Flamengo v Madureira — Monday March 2, 21h, Maracanã. The other semifinal volta. Flamengo lead 3-0 from the ida (goals from De La Cruz, Arrascaeta penalty and Luiz Araujo) and have effectively sealed passage to the final. The Rubro-Negro, however, are under intense pressure from their torcida after losing the Recopa Sul-Americana to Lanus on Thursday (2-3 after extra time at the Maracanã, 2-4 on aggregate), their second title defeat in a month following the Supercopa loss to Corinthians. Madureira need to win by four goals or more — or by three to force penalties. Transmissao: SporTV, Premiere.

Brasileirão — Round 4 recap. The league paused this weekend after a midweek round. Rio clubs: Fluminense lost 1-2 to Palmeiras (away), Vasco lost 1-2 to Santos (Neymar scored twice, including a sublime chip), Flamengo’s match against Mirassol was postponed due to the Recopa. Botafogo v Vitoria also postponed (Libertadores preliminary). Round 5 resumes March 11-13, with Flamengo v Cruzeiro and Vasco v Palmeiras at home, and Remo v Fluminense away.

Cariocão final: If results hold, the final between Fluminense and Flamengo is expected to be played as a single match, date to be confirmed by FERJ — likely the weekend of March 7-8. A Fla-Flu final would repeat the 2025 decider.

09Business & MarketsMarket watch

Ibovespa: Closed Friday at 188,786.98 (-1.16%), the worst session in weeks, triggered by the IPCA-15 reading of 0.84% for February — well above the 0.57% consensus. The index touched an intraday high of 191,005 before retreating sharply. For the week: -0.92%. For February: +4.09%. Year-to-date: +17.17%. The new all-time closing high of 191,490.40 was set on Tuesday February 24, the 13th record close of 2026.

Dollar: R$5.133 (-0.10% Friday). Weekly: -0.81%. February: -2.17%. Year-to-date: -6.46%. The real is at its strongest since late May 2024, sustained by foreign inflows now exceeding R$41.6 billion for the year (through February 25).

IPCA-15: February’s reading of 0.84% (vs 0.57% consensus) was driven by education costs (+5.20%, annual school-fee adjustments) and transport (airfares). The 12-month rate decelerated to 4.10% from 4.50% in January, but remained above the 3.82% forecast. The inflation target is 3.0% with a 1.5-point tolerance band.

Selic: Holds at 15.00%. The Copom meets March 17-18, with growing market expectations for the start of a rate-cutting cycle after the BC’s recent signalling. However, the hotter-than-expected IPCA-15 has cooled bets on an aggressive initial cut, with the DI curve repricing to reflect a more cautious trajectory.

Week ahead: Markets reopen Monday. Key events: Copom minutes analysis continues, B3 earnings season tail-end, and the start of US-Iran nuclear negotiations in Vienna. Political surveys showing a tightening presidential race ahead of 2026 elections remain a background factor.
