CONMEBOL Libertadores 2025 Group Stage Draw Unveils Exciting Matchups

The CONMEBOL Libertadores 2025 group stage draw took place on Monday, March 17, 2025, in Luque, Paraguay, setting the stage for South America’s premier club football tournament.

The draw has created several intriguing groups, with defending champions Botafogo and other Brazilian powerhouses learning their fate in the competition’s first phase.

Defending champion Botafogo headlines Group A, where they will face Argentina’s Estudiantes, Universidad de Chile, and Venezuela’s Carabobo FC. This group presents a balanced challenge for the Brazilian side looking to secure back-to-back titles after their dramatic 2024 triumph over Atlético Mineiro.

Flamengo, one of Brazil’s most popular clubs, was drawn into Group C alongside Ecuador’s LDU Quito, Venezuela’s Deportivo Táchira, and Argentina’s Central Córdoba. With their impressive roster and passionate fan base, Flamengo enters as favorites in this group.

São Paulo finds itself in Group D with Paraguay’s Libertad, Argentina’s Talleres, and Peru’s Alianza Lima. This group is particularly notable as Alianza Lima secured their spot after eliminating Boca Juniors in a dramatic penalty shootout during the qualifying rounds.

Group E features Fortaleza alongside Copa Sudamericana champions Racing (Argentina), Chilean powerhouse Colo-Colo, and Colombia’s Atlético Bucaramanga. This represents one of the most competitive groups in the tournament, with Racing entering as a particularly dangerous opponent.

Perhaps the most intriguing draw is Group F, which pits two Brazilian clubs—Internacional and Bahia—against each other, alongside Uruguay’s Nacional and Colombia’s Atlético Nacional. Bahia’s qualification is especially noteworthy as they returned to the Copa Libertadores group stage after a 30-year absence by defeating Boston River in the final qualifying round.

Palmeiras, the 2020 and 2021 champions, will compete in Group G against Bolivia’s Bolívar, Peru’s Sporting Cristal, and Paraguay’s Cerro Porteño, who advanced through the qualifying stages.

The Road to Qualification

The 2025 Copa Libertadores features 47 teams from the 10 CONMEBOL member associations, with 32 clubs qualifying for the group stage. The competition began with three preliminary rounds, starting on February 4, 2025.

Notable qualification stories include Barcelona of Ecuador, who eliminated Brazilian side Corinthians by winning 3-0 at home before narrowly advancing despite a 2-0 loss in the return leg. Alianza Lima’s journey was equally dramatic, as they eliminated Argentine giants Boca Juniors on penalties after tied 2-2 on aggregate.

Bahia’s qualification was particularly emotional, marking their return to South America’s premier club competition after more than three decades. They secured their place with a 1-0 victory over Boston River of Uruguay thanks to a powerful header from Jean Lucas.

Tournament Format and Schedule

The group stage will feature six matchdays beginning on April 2, 2025, with each team playing home and away against the other three teams in their group. The top two finishers from each group will advance to the Round of 16, while third-place teams will transfer to the 2025 Copa Sudamericana playoffs.

Following the group stage, the competition will proceed through knockout rounds:

  • Round of 16: August 12-21, 2025
  • Quarter-finals: September 16-25, 2025
  • Semi-finals: October 21-30, 2025
  • Final: November 29, 2025 (venue to be determined)

Historical Context and Tournament Significance

The Copa Libertadores, established in 1960, is named after the liberators who led South American independence movements. It represents the pinnacle of club football in the region and has created countless legendary moments throughout its 65-year history.

Independiente of Argentina remains the most successful club in the tournament’s history with seven titles, though they failed to qualify for the 2025 edition. Argentine clubs have accumulated the most victories with 25 wins total, while Brazilian clubs have the largest number of different winning teams with 12.

Botafogo enters as defending champions after winning their first Libertadores title in December 2024, defeating fellow Brazilian side Atlético Mineiro 3-1 despite playing almost the entire match with ten men following Gregore’s red card in the first minute.

Brazilian Dominance and Expectations

Brazilian clubs have established themselves as the dominant force in the Copa Libertadores in recent years. The 2025 edition features seven Brazilian clubs: Botafogo (defending champions), Flamengo, Palmeiras, Fortaleza, Internacional, São Paulo, and Bahia.

Palmeiras, with its recent success in 2020 and 2021, enters as one of the favorites alongside Flamengo and Botafogo. The Brazilian clubs’ financial strength compared to their continental rivals has created a significant competitive advantage, though Argentine clubs like Racing and Estudiantes remain serious contenders.

The 2025 Copa Libertadores promises to deliver the passion, drama, and exceptional football that have made it one of the world’s most exciting club competitions, culminating in the final on November 29, 2025.
