Brazil gains 72 km² of territory with borders recalculation

The Brazilian territory increased by 72.2 km² in 2022.

The verification is from the IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics) survey, released on Wednesday (March 29) in Rio de Janeiro.

The study adjusted the total area of the country to 8,510,417.771 km².

The increase stems from the physical reality of the rivers in some regions (Photo internet reproduction)

According to IBGE, the increase in the territory is due to new international border delineations in parts of Amazonas, Rondônia, Mato Grosso, and Mato Grosso do Sul.

The increase stems from the physical reality of the rivers in the region and is in line with data provided by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Boundary Demarcation Commissions.

MUNICIPALITIES

IBGE has also released updated maps with the new boundaries of 174 Brazilian municipalities.

The changes in the political-administrative division of these cities took place from May 1, 2021, to July 31, 2022.

According to the institute, the updates result from the publication of new legislation, court decisions, and reports/technical opinions prepared by the state agencies responsible for the political-administrative division of each state and forwarded to IBGE.

The state with the largest number of changes in municipal boundaries was Rio Grande do Sul (61 municipalities), followed by Pernambuco (50) and Paraná (47).

There were also changes in Mato Grosso (6), Maranhão, and Rio Grande do Norte (3 each), as well as Tocantins and Goiás (2 each).

Information about the changes can be read on the IBGE website.
