Heavy rains leave at least 42 dead in eight Brazilian states

The heavy rains that hit Brazil in recent weeks have left at least 42 dead in eight states until this Tuesday, the 27th. Deaths occurred in Bahia, Espírito Santo, Minas Gerais, Paraná, Rio de Janeiro, Sergipe, Santa Catarina and São Paulo. 

In the territory of Bahia there is, so far, one fatal victim. In addition, 24,923 people were displaced, that is, they were forced to leave their homes, and 2,220 were made homeless. Bahia is the state with the largest number of municipalities affected by the heavy rains, with 111. 

Espírito Santo recorded two deaths. According to information released by the state government on Monday, 26, 1,243 people were left homeless and 495 homeless.

Minas Gerais, in turn, had the highest number of deaths until early Tuesday night: 13. Including, in one of the most recent cases, the Civil Defense reported that three women were found lifeless after a landslide. which hit four homes during the early hours of Sunday, the 25th, in the municipality of Antônio Dias, in the Vale do Rio Doce. 

The State also has 7,407 displaced people and 1,507 homeless. Like Minas Gerais, Santa Catarina recorded a high number of deaths due to storms. In all, 11 deaths were confirmed until the last day 20. 

In Paraná, two people died due to heavy rains – there are 165 displaced and at least 13 homeless. Two other deaths were registered in the State of Sergipe.

In Rio de Janeiro, the storms left at least four fatal victims. 

In São Paulo, the largest state in the country, so far, six deaths have been recorded, 367 people have been displaced and 17 have been displaced. The Civil Defense of the State issued an alert for heavy rain accompanied by lightning, hail and strong gusts of wind starting this Tuesday, 27th. According to the agency, the storm alert remains until Friday, 30th.

According to the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet), the Northeast, Midwest and Southeast regions of the country should be hit by heavy rains, accompanied by gusts of wind during the last week of 2022. In the Northeast, the rain should occur more isolated in the eastern part of the region. 

In the south of the country, the rains should only last until Friday, with the sun predominating in the last days of the year. In the North region, high temperatures will continue, with the possibility of rain in the late afternoon.
