Brazil: Port of Recife cargo movement grows 30% in December 2021

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The Port of Recife‘s cargo movement closed December 2021 with a growth of 30.37% in the month and 1.96% in the year. In that month, 147,810 tons were moved, and in the twelve months of 2021, 1.3 million tons.

These figures are mainly due to imports, which ended 2021 with a growth of 8.66%, representing 1.3 million tons, surpassing 951,931 tons in 2020.

Sugar continues with the leading position in cargo handled, followed by barley malt, corn, and metallurgical material.

The Pernambuco sweetener closed the year with 317,395 tons handled, of which 136,235 were bulk sugar and 181,160 bagged. Compared to the previous year, bulk sugar grew by 51.59% and bagged sugar by 14.44%. The “white gold” is the main export product of the Port of Recife, leaving the state’s mills and reaching countries such as the United States, Canada, Romania, and the leading exporter, the African continent.

The Port of Recife's good run was not limited to cargo handling. At the end of last year, the anchorage had a revenue of US$4.9 billion, which represented a growth of 11.7% compared to 2020.

Barley malt ranked second in handling with 248,822 tons unloaded and a growth of 18.29%. The destination of malt arriving in the Pernambuco capital is the brewery hub, serving industries such as AmBev, Heineken, and Petrópolis.

The third most popular product was corn. The cargo supplies poultry industries in Pernambuco, such as Mauricéa, Notaro, Asa, and Guaraves, located in Paraíba State. In 2021, 81,978 tons of corn were moved at the Recife anchorage, which represented a growth of 32.20% compared to 2020.

Metallurgical material ranked fourth but had the highest cumulative growth. There were 23,691 tons compared to 8,693 tons in 2020, growing by 172.53%. Steel coils make up this category and supply the state’s metallurgical industry.

INCREASED REVENUES

The Port of Recife’s good run was not limited to cargo handling. The terminal also had an increase in revenues for 2021.

At the end of last year, the anchorage had a revenue of US$4.9 billion, which represented a growth of 11.7% compared to 2020. In October, for example, there was a 98.70% growth in cargo movement, resulting in a 24.52% increase in revenues for the month.

The increase in revenues is due to operating revenues, which accounted for 71.04% of the total collected in 2021. Within the operating percentage, operations linked to the storage segment contributed 35.76% of last year’s revenues.

Finally, President José Lindoso pointed out that “the expectation for 2022 is to attract new investments and grow even more. Our bets are on the dredging works, which will be concluded in the first half of the year and will allow the arrival of ships of larger tonnage, increasing revenues and movement at the Port of Recife”.
