Brazil has arrears of US$1 billion with international organizations, alerts the transition team

Brazil has arrears of about US$1 billion with international organizations, the technical group for planning the transition of government said today, warning of the risk of the country losing its right to vote or to have an active participation in these forums.

The technical coordinator of the government transition, Aloízio Mercadante, told the press that the delays are with organizations such as the United Nations (UN), the World Trade Organization (WTO), the International Labor Organization (ILO) or the Court International Criminal Court, although it did not detail the amounts owed to each agency.

“The foreign policy of the Government has transformed Brazil into a laughing stock, but not just a laughing stock, it is a laughing stock that owes US$1 billion to multilateral organizations. This means that Brazil will be excluded from these forums, it does not have the right to vote and participate,” alerted Mercadante.

According to him, the elected government awaits some negotiations that are underway with Congress to find out if it will have room in public accounts to pay the arrears, although it ruled out that the payment be made in a single time.

For her part, the economist Esther Dweck, who is part of the technical planning group, assured that the idea of the elected government is to set priorities for payments to these organizations, prioritizing avoiding sanctions or those that are considered symbolic for the image of the country.
