Brazil elections 2022: União Brasil and MDB have more candidates leading in the states

União Brasil is the party with more competitive candidates for state governments in the first round of the 2022 elections.

The acronym resulting from the merger between DEM and PSL has six pre-candidates leading or technically tied in this position, according to Poder360’s survey with the most recent electoral polls.

MDB shows that it maintains the capillarity built in the last decades and appears in the ranking sequence. With the addition of Mato Grosso Sul and Roraima, absent in the May survey, and the growth of voting intentions in Alagoas, the MDB went from two to five competitive names.

Poder360 compiled surveys from 23 states and the Federal District, those available so far and registered in the TSE (Superior Electoral Court).

All surveys with known methodologies and from which it was possible to verify the origin of the information were considered.

Competitive candidates are those who lead in first place alone or are tied, within the margin of error, in that position.

PSB, which reformulated its internal picture and attracted federal deputy Marcelo Freixo, in Rio de Janeiro, and João Azêvedo, in Paraíba, gained strength and added to the states already governed by PSB running for reelection – Espírito Santo and Pernambuco. Today, the party has four candidates who lead alone or within the margin of error.

The Workers’ Party (PT) of former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is one of the main affected by the rise of União Brasil.

PT is leading the reelection of Fátima Bezerra in Rio Grande do Norte and leads with Fernando Haddad in São Paulo, the largest electoral college in the country (34.7 million voters).

PT is behind, however, in Piauí, Ceará, and Bahia, three Northeastern states in which he won in 2018.

President Jair Bolsonaro’s party, the Liberal Party (PL), has one competitive name: Claudio Castro, the current governor of Rio de Janeiro – just in the electoral stronghold where the president built his political career.

PSD, in Mato Grosso do Sul and Paraná, and the Republicans, in Santa Catarina and Tocantins, have two pre-candidates in first place alone or a technical tie in this position.

Novo (Minas Gerais), PSDB (Rio Grande do Sul), PP (Acre), PTB (Alagoas), and Solidariedade (Pernambuco) complete the list of parties with one competitive candidate each.
