Health Secretary Says Brazil Is ‘Model’ in Fighting Covid-19

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Nearing two million cases and with over 75,000 deaths from Covid-19, Brazil’s Ministry of Health maintained on Thursday that the country is a “model” in the fight against the disease worldwide.

“The United States has more than double the number of our cases and we have many more recovered than the United States. And if we are recovering our population, our infected patients, it is because, indeed, this Ministry has made an enormous effort in recent months to give professionals on the front line capacity to manage their patients. I think so, the country is a great model in fighting the disease in the world,” – said Arnaldo Correia de Medeiros, the Ministry’s Health Regulatory Secretary.

According to the latest balance of the Ministry of Health, Brazil counts 1,966,748 cases of the disease and 75,366 deaths from Covid-19. Only the United States registers more cases and more deaths than Brazil.

Arnaldo’s statement was in response to a question as to what mistakes the government and the interim Minister of Health, Eduardo Pazuello, would have made to drive Brazil to rank second in the number of cases and deaths by Covid-19.

According to the epidemiological report released on July 15th by the Ministry, Brazil has been leading the number of deaths caused by the disease per epidemiological week for five weeks. On average, 1,015 daily deaths were recorded in Brazil during this period.

Despite these numbers, Medeiros focused on the number of recovered patients to argue that Brazil is a model in the treatment of Covid-19.
