RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Senator Rogério Carvalho will be the new leader of the Workers’ Party (PT) in the Senate. The announcement was made by the current leader, Senator Humberto Costa. “He will be elected today,” he affirmed.
In the Chamber, Deputy Enio Verri will take the lead in place of Paulo Pimenta. The deputy is the rapporteur of the bill that deals with the portability of electricity bill, one of the priority agendas for the government.
Despite the change of leaders in Congress, Humberto anticipates that the relationship with the government will be similar to the first year of Bolsonaro’s management. “It should not change much (the government’s relationship with Congress). In fact, this government does not have a basis of support, of sustenance,” he said.
According to the senator, the government will face challenges in passing projects “that go beyond the economic agenda”.
However, Rogério Carvalho believes that the opposition still needs visibility. “The opposition is not large enough to face the hidden force behind Bolsonaro’s government, which wants all kinds of deregulation and to have control of everything in our country,” said the new PT leader.
