Brazil’s Unemployment Rate Stands at 11.8 Percent in Quarter Ended September

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The unemployment rate in Brazil stood at 11.8 percent in the quarter ended in September, according to data from the National Continuous Household Sample Survey (PNAD Continuous) released on Thursday, October 31st, by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).

The result exceeded the analysts’ forecast median of 11.6 percent of the Broadcast Projections. The range of estimates went from 11.5 to 11.9 percent.

Over the same period in 2018, the unemployment rate measured by the PNAD Continuous was 11.9 percent. In the quarter eded in August this year, the rate was 11.8 percent.

The worker’s real average income was R$2,298 (US$574.5) in the quarter ended in September. The result represents an increase of 0.1 percent in relation to the same period of the previous year.

The real income mass paid to the employed totaled R$210.4 billion in the quarter through September, an increase of 1.8 percent in relation to the same period in the previous year.
