RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – São Paulo State now records more deaths from Covid-19 than Mexico, according to the State Health Secretariat. The total number of fatalities reached 4,782 on Sunday, May 17th, compared to 3,709 on May 10th. The Latin country accounts for 4,767 deaths to date, according to data from the World Health Organization.
Over the past week, 16,901 new infections were confirmed, totaling 62,345 statewide. This means that the number of cases in São Paulo is 38 percent higher than in Mexico.
There is at least one person infected with Covid-19 in 463 cities in the state. Deaths from the disease have been recorded in 213 municipalities in São Paulo.
Among the fatal victims are 2,832 men and 1,950 women, 72.9 percent of whom are aged 60 or older. The main risk factors associated with mortality are heart disease (58.6 percent), diabetes mellitus (43.6 percent), neurological disease (11.4 percent), kidney disease (10.8 percent), and lung disease (9.7 percent).
