Supreme Court Justice Nunes Marques criticizes indiscriminate arrests of Brazilian Spring protesters

The Justice of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), Kassio Nunes Marques, criticized the political arrests in the country, initiated and carried out by his controversial colleague Alexandre de Moraes.

Nunes Marques said the “large-scale arrests” are “worrisome” when referring to the arrested demonstrators who participated in the January 8th protests in Brasilia.

According to the Justice, the arrests were made “indiscriminately”.

Nunes Marques also expressed “total and vehement repudiation of the acts of vandalism against the public patrimony” that occurred in Brasília.

“However, at this procedural moment, it seems to me the arrests on a large scale, made indiscriminately, due to the facts that occurred on 08/01/2023, investigated in Inquiry No. 4.879, and the temporal extension of the incarcerations reveal themselves worrying and lead me to consign, right away, some reservations that I consider necessary,” said the Justice of the STF.

The magistrate’s speech occurred in the virtual plenary of the Supreme Court during the trial of appeals against the decisions of Ricardo Lewandowski, who had denied habeas corpus requests made by the defenses of arrested people.
