Republicanos Party Confirms Rio Mayor Crivella as Candidate for Re-election

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The current mayor of Rio de Janeiro, Marcelo Crivella, was officially announced as a candidate for re-election by the Republicanos party on Monday afternoon, September 7th.

Crivella will have the support of six other parties in the electoral coalition: Patriota (Patriots, right-wing to far-right), Progressistas (Progressives – right-wing conservative-liberal), Solidariedade (Solidarity – center-left), Podemos (We Can – center to center-right), PTC (Christian Labour Party – center) and PRTB (Brazilian Labor Renewal Party – right-wing to far-right).

In total, there will be 150 city councilor candidates nominated separately by parties in the coalition for mayor [coalitions for councilor are prohibited]. Among them is current city councilor Carlos Bolsonaro, son of President Jair Bolsonaro, who recently joined the Republicanos.

When Crivella began his acceptance speech, he pointed out that he was the target of 15 CPIs (Parliamentary Committee of Inquiry), three impeachment processes, and 60 lawsuits, which, according to him, resulted in the union of several parties behind his candidacy:

“And what was the result of all this? It was the union of such a spectacular group, the members of President Bolsonaro’s family, who have joined us. We are the representation of our suffering and brave people,” he said.
