Man Ordered to Pay Damages After Using Homophobic Curses on Facebook

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – LGBT activist Felipe Resende obtained, through the Rio de Janeiro civil court system, a judgment against a man who made homophobic comments against him.

When celebrating the equivalence of LGBT-phobia to the crime of racism by the Brazilian Federal Supreme Court (STF) on his Facebook account, Felipe was attacked by this man and, at the same time, Felipe decided to take action.

In the post, a man offended Felipe and all gays by using the word ‘bicha’, and afterwards said that “besides being a bicha he [Felipe] had the face of a drug addict”.

Felipe took screen prints from his Facebook page and added them to the complaint as evidence.

The defendant was ordered to pay moral damages in the amount of R$10,000 (US$2,500). The judge also put in the record that hate speech that attack the dignity of any human person will not be tolerated.
