Thousands March on Mexico City Against López Obrador’s Government

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – A week and a half before Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s second year as president of Mexico, the National Anti-AMLO Front (FRENAAA) held a march to the Monument to the Revolution to the Angel of Independence, which they called “The Great Awakening of Mexico” to protest his government.

Around 10 am on November 21st, the members of this movement gathered at the same place where the president commemorated the 110th anniversary of the Mexican Revolution. Only this time, they arrived with cards and slogans against the president.

An hour later, they began to advance towards the Angel of Independence amid shouts such as “Go to your ranch” or “Lopez, you have united us to get you out of the presidency!”

Later, through its Twitter account, the organization wrote: “We are beginning a new stage in our non-violent struggle and under the threshold of the rule of law. We will make our action more forceful to remove this government. The National Economic Strike has begun”.

The Mexican president commented that this opposition organization “has all the guarantees to demonstrate, they are free,” he pointed out that there would be no form of repression during their events.

Obrador With High Approval Rating

The approval of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador fell to 59% in October, three percentage points less than in September, according to a survey published on Monday, November 2nd, by the newspaper El Financiero.

In spite of the fall, the percentage of approval of the president remains relatively stable since May, oscillating between 56% and 62% of acceptance among Mexicans, according to the study.

However, the level of approval of the president in October was much lower in the ten states with whose governors he maintains a dispute over the fiscal regime, grouped in an entity called Alianza Federalista (Federalist Alliance).

Who is FRENAAA?

FRENAAA is a civil group made up of people from all walks of life. Employees, business owners, merchants, entrepreneurs, upper class, middle class, and lower class.

On September 20th, the national president of Morena, Mexico’s ruling party, said on Twitter that the organization is a radical, far-right group intent on destabilizing Mexico.

“The protests and the camp organized by FRENAAA constitute a provocation encouraged by the country’s most reactive economic groups. It’s a fascist group that wants to break the political stability we’re experiencing in Mexico today,” Alfonso Ramírez Cuéllar said.
