São Paulo’s private hospitals register drop in Covid-19 admissions, after weeks of increases

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The coronavirus pandemic seems to be improving in the state of São Paulo. On Friday, April 9th, Health Secretary Jean Gorinchteyn reported a 17.7% drop in hospitalization rates as a whole, compared to the previous week.

A survey conducted on Tuesday, April 13th, with five private hospitals in the São Paulo capital reveals an even stronger trend.

At Albert Einstein Hospital, the number of Covid-19 inpatients fell by about 30% over the past week. Compared with March 29th, the drop represents 45%. At the Sírio-Libanês Hospital, the drop was 11.5% last week. But in comparison with March 22nd, three weeks ago, the reduction was 32.5%.

Other private hospitals in the city of São Paulo registering a drop in admissions for Covid-19 are Hcor, with a 27.5% reduction in the number of patients hospitalized for the disease compared to a week ago and 35% in the last 14 days; and Nove de Julho Hospital, which registered a 24% reduction in daily admissions for Covid-19, when compared to the volume registered three weeks ago.

At the Vila Nova Star hospital, no decrease in the volume of admissions was registered. However, a reduction of 50% was observed in the volume of emergency room visits, compared with the last 15 days of March and the start of April. Over the whole month of March, 61% of emergency room visits pertained to Covid-19. In the first 13 days of April, this rate fell to 41%.

According to data from Info Tracker, – a pandemic monitoring platform maintained by the University of São Paulo (USP) in partnership with the Paulista State University (UNESP), on Tuesday, April 13th, the overall bed occupancy rate for Covid-19 in the city of São Paulo stood at 73.47%, representing a 15% drop compared to 7 days ago.

Despite the improvement, the pandemic scenario in the city of São Paulo, the state, and in Brazil is still serious.

On Tuesday, April 13th, 17,306 new Covid-19 cases and 657 deaths were confirmed in the state of São Paulo. In Brazil, there were 3,808 deaths and 82,186 diagnoses in 24 hours.
