Brazil registers 2,029 new deaths from Covid-19 and total passes 520,000 (July 1)

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Brazil on Thursday reported 2,029 new deaths from Covid-19, bringing the total number of fatalities from the disease in the country to 520,095, the Health Ministry said.

There were also 65,163 new coronavirus cases, with the total number of infections in the country advancing to 18,622,304, the ministry added.

A bulletin published by the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz) the day before indicated that the country had seen an improvement in the occupancy rates of intensive care units (ICUs) for adults with Covid-19, with only three states showing rates higher than 90% – Tocantins, Paraná, and Santa Catarina.

“The study also signals a drop in mortality rates, but evidence that the country faces a high plateau of transmission, at a much higher level than that observed in mid-2020,” the institution added.

The Brazilian state most affected by Covid-19 in absolute terms, São Paulo, reached on Monday the marks of 3,743,291 cases and 128,322 deaths.

The federal government reports 16,931,272 people as recovered from Covid-19 and 1,170,937 patients in follow-up.
