Violent Crime Drops 21 Percent in State of Rio de Janeiro, Institute Says

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Violent crimes – which include murder, robbery followed by death and bodily injury followed by death – showed a 21 percent decrease in the state of Rio in 2019, compared to the previous year.

The data were released on Tuesday, December 17th, by the Institute of Public Safety (ISP), linked to the state government.

The year 2019 recorded 3,816 victims of violent crimes, representing the lowest number of the past 20 years. In 2018, there were 4,816 victims. When compared to November of the previous year, there was a decrease of 15 percent.

First-degree murder fell by 20 percent from January to November 2019, compared to the same period last year. There were 3,669 deaths this year and 4,604 in 2018, the lowest number of victims for the year since the beginning of the historical series in 1991.

Compared to November 2018, the decline was 16 percent.

There was also a drop in the number of armed robberies followed by death. From January to November 2019, compared to the same period last year, there was a 32 percent reduction. In 2019, there were 110 victims, the lowest number for the period since 2012.

In relation to deaths due to the intervention of state agents, there was a one percent reduction in November this year, compared to the same period last year.

This was the fourth month followed by a drop in the indicator, with 195 cases in July, 173 in August, 154 in September, 144 in October and 135 in November.

When compared to October this year, the reduction reached six percent.
