Procon notifies Twitter for leaking data on Brazilians

Consumer protection foundation Procon São Paulo notified Twitter for the leak of data of millions of Brazilian users of the platform and published in a hacker forum.

Access to the data was revealed last week by an Israeli electronic security company. The attack was “one of the most significant leaks,” according to Alon Gal, co-founder of Hudson Rock.

The leak surfaced after users of the social network received a message from an email monitoring system that warns when any personal information is exposed.

It is not yet known exactly what data was leaked, but reports point to name, login, number of followers, among other information.

The consumer protection body is charging Twitter to “clarify what measures it will take to repair the damage resulting from the leak of personal data and prevent the failure from happening again”. The company has until the next 13th to respond to Procon São Paulo.

“Consumer relations must be supported by strict security criteria”, Guilherme Moraes, a lawyer and member of the Brazilian Bar Association consumer protection committee, told Oeste. “Any affront to the basic principles provided for in the Consumer Protection Code must be curbed”, he explained.

Procon’s notification has the initial objective of clarifying the facts that should support the opening of an administrative procedure by the agency.
