RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – A Datafolha survey shows that an overwhelming majority of the population is opposed to Jair Bolsonaro’s plan to appoint his son Eduardo to the post of ambassador to the United States. Only 23 percent consider that the occupant of the Palácio do Planalto is right in naming his son, according to Folha de S.Paulo.
So far, Eduardo Bolsonaro‘s appointment has not been made official by his father. In addition to the population’s disapproval, the nomination is rejected by Itamaraty (Foreign Office) career diplomats and by legal scholars, who deem it an act of nepotism.
Eduardo Bolsonaro has already demonstrated that he has no technical or political training for the position.
The approval of his name, if made official by Bolsonaro, will depend on Brazil’s Senate, where Eduardo Bolsonaro is holding talks to raise votes.
His father has signaled that he is willing to engage in the “old give-and-take politics,” which he emphatically used to condemn, to get the nomination.
There is no date set for the votes to take place in the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs and on the Senate floor.
