Bolsonaro’s Statements are Hindering Investments, Says Maranhão Governor

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The Governor of Maranhão, Flávio Dino, said on Thursday, September 5th, that President Jair Bolsonaro‘s statements are a hindrance to investments in Brazil. “I hope that Bolsonaro has some honest friend near him,” he told an audience of entrepreneurs at an event in Brasília.

Dino further argued that “it is not healthy” for the president to generate a crisis every day.

“When there was the re-democratization of Brazil, Figueiredo was the president. And he lived, as much as possible, with opposition governors,” Dino said, referring to the former president of the Republic João Baptista Figueiredo. “So, I think it is necessary to compare it with other moments in Brazilian life”.

The governor further stated that he does not sanction “ideological vetoes” to Bolsonaro’s proposals. “Yesterday, I advocated the approval of the agreement of the Alcântara base, which was celebrated by the federal government,” he exemplified. “We have no ideological vetoes.”

Eduardo Leite, the governor of Rio Grande do Sul, also present at the event, refrained from commenting directly on the effects of Bolsonaro’s statements on the country’s investments. Leite stated that the current period is difficult to be managed. “A huge challenge in the current times,” he said, referring to the interference of social media in politics. According to him, there is “daily teasing by tweets“.

The two governors took part in the conference “Brazil’s Agenda for Economic Growth and Development” on Thursday, promoted by the Council of the Americas (COA), in Brasília.
