Greenwald Says Allegations Against David Miranda Are “Illegal and False Leak”

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Journalist Glenn Greenwald recorded a video in response to the Financial Activities Control Council (COAF) accusations of atypical transaction in the bank account of his husband, Federal Deputy David Miranda (PSOL), that were leaked by O Globo newspaper.

One of the people in charge of The Intercept Brasil website, Greenwald said the information is an “illegal and false leak”.

“It is very ironic, because a major subject of our report is the fact that the Prosecutor’s Office constantly abuses its power against its enemies, including by illegally leaking information in order to defile and destroy the reputation of its opponents, using media outlets such as Antagonista and Globo, who are not journalists but partners, which is exactly what they did in this case”, said the journalist on a video on YouTube.

Greenwald points out that the report was sent by COAF to the Prosecutor’s Office only two days after The Intercept Brasil began to release leaked messages on Lava Jato.

“What they are trying to do is to set up a false equivalence with Flávio Bolsonaro, Fabrício Queiroz and Carlos Bolsonaro‘s case, who are certainly guilty, with [the case of] my husband,” he said.

The journalist said the money in his husband’s account has an explanation, and the answer is easy.

“They want you to think that my husband and I have a dirty reputation, by not using the legal process in court with evidence, [but] using cowardly tactics, illegal leaks,” he added.

“Their problem is that this is very easy to answer. And if O Globo had journalists and reporters instead of propagandists for the Prosecutor’s Office, they would already know this.”

Greenwald points out that his salary is public knowledge, since the company he works for is an NGO in the United States, which is required to publish how much each employee earns.

“My salary, and I’m a little embarrassed to say it, is much higher than the amount that O Globo said David is getting into his account. And I have other earnings. I have five books, four of them on The New York Times’ bestseller list, I have movie participations, I have lecture income.”

“I transfer all the money I earn each month to Brazil, because we live here, and that’s it. These financial transactions are atypical, yes, but not illicit, because the Prosecutor’s Office knows it will lose, the judge has already said that he will not accept its request until David has a chance to show the evidence.”
