After a group of senators, Moraes still bans visit to political prisoners in Brasilia

After a group of senators visited political prisoners in Brasilia to investigate allegations of violation of the human rights of the Brazilian Spring protesters detained as a result of the acts of Jan. 8, the Justice of the Supreme Court (STF), Alexandre de Moraes, decided to prohibit the visit of “any persons” to the detained protesters.

According to the magistrate’s decision, only those previously authorized by the rapporteur of the case, himself, will be able to visit the demonstrators.

Last week, senators Magno Malta, Rogério Marinho, Seif, Moro, Girão, Marcos Pontes, Zequinha Marinho, Tereza Cristina, Heinze, and Jaime Bagattoli were present at the Papuda and the Hive.

The parliamentarians requested support from the entity for the speedy fulfillment of the due legal process, the individualization of conduct, and the guarantee of the prisoners’ human rights, ensuring their transfer to their states of residence or their release to await trial in freedom.

In January, a group of almost two thousand lawyers requested that the Brazilian Bar Association (OAB) take action about the “inhuman state” in which women are being held at Colmeia, the Women’s Penitentiary in the Federal District (DF).

In the document sent to the OAB, the lawyers denounce “absurd conditions” and a “deeply humiliating state” that range from lack of communication with family members to lack of absorbents during the menstrual period.

According to the defense of the detainees, the cells are dirty and wet with menstrual blood “with a strong stench”.
