Weekly agenda: Lula’s MPs, CPI of January 8 and Nicolás Maduro in Brazil

Riotimesonline brings this Monday (29) a selection of issues that should mark the agenda of power and politics this week.

LULA’S NEW LAWS COULD EXPIRE

This week, president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) risks seeing 6 of the 7 that expire on Thursday (June 1) lose their effect.

MP 1154, which reformulates the ministries, is the one that most mobilizes the government and should be approved with changes.

The MP is expected to be voted in the House of Representatives plenary on Tuesday (30) and the following day in the Senate.

Rui Costa said that the government would make efforts to resume the text. The chance of success is low. Without a solid base, Lula has few means to react.

It is not only in the analysis of the deputies that Lula must expect defeats. Last week, the urgency was approved for the vote on the temporal milestone limiting indigenous territories’ delimitation to those occupied in 1988.

The government is against it. But the score that determined the urgency, 324 to 131, shows that the government can do little.

STATE VISITS BRAZIL

The president of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, is expected to attend Brasilia to participate in the Meeting of Presidents of South American Countries on Tuesday (30). It will be his first visit to Brazil since the ban imposed by Jair Bolsonaro (PL).

On Thursday, Lula will receive the president of Finland, Sauli Niinistö. They will have a bilateral meeting at the Palácio do Planalto. One of the themes will be the war in Ukraine.
CPI of January 8

In Congress, the rapporteur of the CPI of January 8, Eliziane Gama (PSD-MA), presents the group’s work plan with the investigation timeline.

The government has a majority in the group. Eliziane is close to Minister Flavio Dino (Justice), the main target of the Bolsonarists. She will try to shield him.

TAX DECLARATIONS

The deadline to declare income tax ends on Wednesday (31). As of next Thursday, 31 million had already completed the process. The IRS expects 38 million.

The first batch of refunds will be paid on the same day that the deadline ends. The process will be faster this year because the tax authorities have adopted the pix.

ECONOMY

On Tuesday (30), the government’s preliminary result for April will be released. Projections point to a surplus of more than R$ 15 (US3) billion. This will be good news for Lula. In March, the balance was negative by R$7.1 billion.

On Wednesday (31), the IBGE will release the unemployment figures for April. There should be no sudden movements in comparison to March. The rate should remain close to 8.8%.
Justice

The Brazilian Supreme Electoral Court (TSE) will invest Floriano de Azevedo Marques and André Ramos Tavares as sitting Justices on Tuesday.

Lula ignored the pressure and chose two male lawyers for the Court’s titular vacancies. The STF (Supreme Federal Court) had nominated two women: Daniela Lima Borges and Edilene Lobo.

The president of the STF, Rosa Weber, has put on the agenda for next Thursday (June 1) a lawsuit questioning article 28 of the Drug Law, which considers criminal anyone who buys, keeps, transports, or takes with him substances of this kind.
