Brazil: “Revanchism” is consolidated as a policy of the Lula government – Estadão newspaper

By Cristyan Costa

The newspaper O Estado de S. Paulo (Estadão) said on Monday, 22, that the “revanchism” is increasingly consolidated as a policy of the Lula government.

It is the third largest newspaper in Brazil and has the second-largest circulation in the city of São Paulo, behind only Folha.

The posture of the PT administration before the mandate’s removal of former federal congressman Deltan Dallagnol (Podemos-PR) is cited in an editorial.

“Faced with the decision of the Electoral Justice to annul the mandate of congressman Deltan Dallagnol for allegedly not meeting the requirements of electoral legislation, a laconic ‘nothing to declare’ would be the only desirable response of a responsible government and aware that there is no time to waste to gather forces able to face the country’s challenges,” observed Estadão.

“But instead, the PT government, as if led by pyromaniac children, found time to employ the state machine to fabricate memes tripping its challenger.”

DALLAGNOL

Further on, Estadão notes that instead of “throwing water on the boil, the government is blowing the ember”.

“The youthful euphoria in the face of setbacks from opponents like Dallagnol suggests nervousness and even more: a calculated strategy,” the newspaper said.

“The government is increasingly inclined to appeal to emotion, the past, and polarization to justify its presence in the Planalto as a wall of containment to the Bolsonarist barbarism.”

“But this smokescreen does not disguise the lack of direction, new ideas, and base. In this vacuum, revanchism is increasingly consolidated as government policy.”

For Estadão, the Lula government’s attacks on the advances achieved in the economy, such as the State Law and the Sanitation Framework, are also examples of its desire for revenge against a Brazil that worked.
