Brazil: Two left-wing parties articulate federation to escape Lula’s party’s “orbit”

Two left-wing parties that integrate the base of support of the Presidential Palace have opened negotiations to form a block outside the orbit of the PT.

The Brazilian Socialist Party PSB and the Democratic Labour Party PDT are articulating a center-left federation to escape from what they call PT “hegemonism”.

PT is Lula’s party.

The subject has already been discussed in private conversations by the PDT’s interim president, André Figueiredo, the Minister of Social Security, Carlos Lupi, and the PSB’s president, Carlos Siqueira.

The party federations were created in the electoral reform approved by Congress in September 2021 and have already been valid for last year’s disputes.

The model provides for two or more parties to act in a unified manner in elections and the following legislature.

According to the legislation, this union must be sustained for at least four years.

The federation acts in the legislature as a single caucus without the parties having to merge.

In the case of negotiations between PDT and PSB, reported by O Globo, Siqueira has also been sought by the president of Solidarity, Paulinho da Força.

The PSB leader will present the idea to the party’s National Executive in a meeting this Thursday, 9.

“OWN SPACE”

“We already had a good experience with the PSB in the previous legislature when we formed a bloc.”

“The federation would be important to enhance our performance in Congress and organize our own space to arrive at the municipal elections without being satellites of the PT,” said Antonio Neto, PDT’s vice-president, to Estadão.

In the 2022 presidential race, PDT launched Ciro Gomes, a candidate who adopted an anti-Petro narrative and criticized Lula, while PSB – the party to which the now vice-president Geraldo Alckmin is affiliated – supported the PT candidate.

After the election, however, PDT joined the governing base after receiving the Social Security portfolio.

“Our motivation is not to be against anyone but to be a new force in the center-left. The new legislation tends to lead to a tapering off (of the number of parties) under penalty of disappearance. The federation is a requirement of reality,” said Siqueira.

“The federation with the PT was blocked because they had a hegemonic vision,” he said about the attempted partnership with PT in 2022.

Both PSB and PDT came out smaller from the polls.

The PSB fell from 32 to 14 elected federal deputies and PDT from 28 to 9.

PP AND UNIÃO BRASIL

In another party movement, PP and União Brasil reached an impasse in their articulation to form a center-right federation.

The PP was in Jair Bolsonaro’s (PL) coalition, and União Brasil commanded three PT government ministries.

The negotiations now face regional disagreements.

The two parties had hoped to hit the hammer by the middle of this month.
