Lula da Silva says Bolsonaro follows “fascist rite” that encourages acts

By Mariana Haubert

The president-elect, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), said this Tuesday (13 Dec 2022) that the current Chief Executive, Jair Bolsonaro (PL), follows “the rite that all fascists follow in the world” by not recognizing its defeat in this year’s elections and encouraging acts that question the electoral process.

“This citizen has not yet recognized his defeat. He continues to encourage the fascist activists who are out on the street moving around,” he said.

According to Lula da Silva, Bolsonaro never phoned him in a democratic gesture of recognition of the election result. The petista said that whenever he lost an election, he phoned the winner.

“This citizen continues to deny the result of the elections. He keeps encouraging people to deny it. He even denied it in the election he won against [Fernando] Haddad in the 2nd round [in 2018], he denied saying he could have won in the 1nd round. That is, he follows the rite that all fascists follow in the world”, he added.

On the night of Monday (Dec 12), radical Bolsonarists tried to invade the headquarters of the PF (Federal Police), in Brasília, and vandalized cars and buses. Acts of vandalism were recorded around the corporation’s building, close to malls and hotels. Security has also been tightened around the hotel where Lula da Silva is staying in Brasilia.

During his speech, the president-elect also criticized the way Bolsonaro conducted his government. He said that the current Chief Executive “governed without Congress” and “without organized society”. He assigned the responsibility of governing to the Minister of Economy, Paulo Guedes.

“He still insisted on saying ‘I don’t understand anything, my Ipiranga station understands’. And he is showing what he is now”, declared Lula da Silva.
