In a letter to Lula da Silva, Brazil’s landless workers call for the distribution of land from large estates

The Landless Workers Movement (MST) launched an “open letter” with several demands this Tuesday (Nov. 29) to be officially delivered to Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT, progressive-globalist).

Some of the demands to the next PT government are the distribution of land from large farms to settlers, no deforestation, and the fight against illegal mining.

In the last four years, on the other hand, the MST has been opposed to the delivery of land to settlers made by the government of Jair Bolsonaro (PL, right).

More than 400,000 titles and militants of the group are accused of violence against families who decided to leave the movement to have their own lands.

In the letter, the MST defended land distribution from the latifundium, mainly near the cities, “so that food-producing farmer families can multiply”.

On the other hand, it demands the creation of a National Reforestation Plan.

The landless also demand mechanisms to increase income, such as the Bolsa Familia and adjustments to the minimum wage.

Another point is the encouragement of agroecology to produce healthy food “without damaging nature,” generating more jobs and improving the physical productivity of crops.

The MST criticized mining, claiming that both sectors would be responsible for the depredation “of the environment and natural wealth just for the sake of private profit”.

The group also calls for creating a program to implement agricultural machinery for family farming.

In addition to the claims, the letter claimed that the increase in social inequality has deepened after the Dilma Rousseff (PT) government and with “the four years of a neoliberal government with fascist and authoritarian practices”.

The MST also stated that it would fight all forms of discrimination against blacks and LGBT people and claimed that these prejudices were “fuelled by fascist Bolsonarism”.

During Bolsonaro’s government, there has been a reduction in collective land invasions compared to former PT governments.
