The resistance of part of the PT party (progressive-globalist) to the former congressman, Geraldo Alckmin (PSB, center-left), as Lula da Silva’s vice-president is nothing new, but in recent days the discontent with Alckmin’s leading role in the transition has taken on new contours.
Petitioners now complain about the “excessive empowerment” of the vice president.
According to Bela Megale’s column in O Globo newspaper, allies and members of the PT party have asked Lula da Silva to move to Brasilia as soon as possible as a way to reduce the role of Alckmin, who PT members accuse of having included “too many people” in the transition.
Internally, petistas say that “alckmistas” who were off the radar screen are already pleading for the command of key ministries, such as the Office of the Federal Attorney General (AGU) and the Office of the Comptroller General (CGU).
To the discontent of some wings of the PT, Lula da Silva himself has stated that Alckmin will have an “important role” in the government.
