Rafael López Aliaga confirmed as Mayor of Peru’s capital

After counting 100% of the votes by the National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE), Rafael López Aliaga has been confirmed as the virtual mayor of the Peruvian capital, Lima.

According to the ONPE website, the Renovación Popular founder received 26.342 percent of the valid votes and was supported by 1,402,627 Lima residents.

Daniel Urresti (Podemos Perú) is in second place with 25.348 percent of the vote and the support of 1,349,725 Lima residents.

Rafael López Aliaga stands by his decision not to meet with President Pedro Castillo, despite criticism from members of the executive branch and pro-government deputies who view López Aliaga as part of a “coup plot.”

Earlier, the former presidential candidate said he would “never” accept an invitation to the government palace and urged the head of state to “flee to another country so he would not be persecuted.”

In this sense, he assured the press that he would not coordinate the municipal budget with Castillo Terrones when he becomes mayor in January 2023.

“I coordinate the budget directly with Congress, the issue of the legal framework for the Lima region for 2023, and the responsibility for health care. Lima’s municipal government is autonomous. It also has spending and administrative capacity,” he argued.
