Brazil’s president and candidate for re-election in this Sunday’s presidential elections, Jair Bolsonaro, called cooperation with Russia on fertilizers vital.
“Russia is vital for us on the issue of fertilizers. I talked for three hours in February with [Russian] President [Vladimir] Putin on that and other issues, also on the issue of diesel, and other things that I will reveal to you as they happen,” Bolsonaro told the press in Brasilia in response to a question from Sputnik.
Bolsonaro met with Putin in Moscow in mid-February. According to the government, that visit was essential for Brazil to secure the arrival of Russian fertilizers that are vital for Brazil’s booming agricultural sector.
On June 27, Putin assured Bolsonaro that Moscow would continue uninterrupted supplies of Russian fertilizers to Brazil, according to a statement published on the Kremlin’s website.
The first round of the Brazilian presidential elections was held on October 2. With 99% of the votes counted, the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) gave former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva 48.3% of the votes (57 million voters) and Bolsonaro 43.2% (51 million votes).
