Brazil elections 2022: Bolsonaro shares article speaking of a coup by the Supreme Court

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) shared in his message groups on May 22 an article by journalist José Roberto Guzzo, known as J.R. Guzzo, for the magazine Revista Oeste and reproduced on the newspaper Jornal da Cidade Online website.

Guzzo’s text suggests that there is a “coup d’état in preparation” in Brazil to prevent the reelection of the current head of the Executive.

“This coup is being mounted by the enemies of the president of the Republic and is aimed at preventing him from being re-elected for a new four-year term. The general idea is to give victory to his only real opponent in the election, former President Lula,” the text reads.

The “enemies” listed by the journalist are:

  • Federal Supreme Court (STF) and the “high judicial apparatus in Brasilia”;
  • politicians from “old, wormy Brazil and the enemy of progress – from the PSDB to José Sarney (MDB);
  • the media – both journalists and their bosses;
  • the”national consortium formed by the public works contractors, the pirate businessmen, the thieves in general, the intellectual classes, the corporations afflicted with gender, race, and sustainability issues, the soap opera artists and the leftist bankers”.

The goal of the above group would be, according to Guzzo, to elect Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (Workers’ Party – PT) or “any solution other than Jair Bolsonaro,” and prevent the current president “from governing Brazil and executing the projects that the majority of the electorate approves.”

Other topics covered in the article and what Guzzo says:

  • coup – “organized in front of everyone and executed, precisely, by those who present themselves to the public as the great defenders of democracy, the rule of law and civil power – and who, in Brazil today, feel anguished by the threat of losing the comforts they have”;
  • role of the STF in the coup – “the STF will indeed carry out a coup d’état to prevent Bolsonaro from serving a second term – if it comes to the conclusion that it can carry out this coup, that is if it is sure that everyone will bow their heads if the ministers turn the tables;
  • Roberto Barroso, STF Justice – “prominent propagator of the amputation of the president’s powers”;
  • Edson Fachin, STF Justice – “overturned all of Lula’s convictions, in what was possibly the most insane act in the history of the Judiciary in Brazil, because he thought, and quite rightly so, that he could do this without anyone’s real opposition”;
  • Alexandre de Moraes, STF Justice – “commits one absurdity after another against the laws in force in Brazil, starting with the Federal Constitution, and nobody, neither the Congress nor the Judiciary itself, says anything against his decisions”;
  • STF composition – “Of the 11 current ministers of the STF, 7 were nominated by Lula and Dilma. Of the remaining four, one is Gilmar Mendes and the other is Alexandre de Moraes. What impartiality can be honestly expected from a group like this?”;
  • Covid’s CPI – “was on the front pages and in prime time for six straight months, accused Bolsonaro of nine different crimes and, in the end, failed to generate a single, miserable complaint”.
