Peru tops list of e-commerce growth and development in Latin America

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The COVID-19 pandemic has changed consumer behavior driving the use of digital tools and electronic devices, which have accelerated the consumption of e-commerce in Peru and the world.

According to a study by Euromonitor International, Peru tops the list of growth and development of e-commerce in Latin America with 87%. According to the report, it is followed by Brazil (61%), Colombia (53%), Mexico (50%), Chile (46%), and Argentina (36%).

In this sense, it is necessary to implement a quality e-commerce strategy with the help of tools such as platforms, software, processes, and services that provide the end customer with an extraordinary shopping experience.

USER BEHAVIOR IN PERU

In a study by Ecomsur, it has been detected that user behavior in Peru has changed compared to 2020.

According to Daniel Guevara, Head of Sales at Ecomsur Peru, in 2021, the day with the most user interactions will be Mondays, while in 2020, users had the same tendency on Wednesdays.

In addition, there are two trends in payment methods in Peru: MercadoPago accumulated 34% of transactions, and PayU obtained 31% of them.

“We currently have a nocturnal consumer who does much of his shopping at night around 10 PM due to the work issues,” said Guevara.

DEMOGRAPHICS

Regarding the participation by gender and age groups in online shopping, Guevara affirms that women make more purchases on Ecomsur Family sites.

According to Ecomsur figures, women accounted for 72% of total orders and 74% of website traffic.

In addition, the gender gap decreased by 2% in sessions but increased by 4% in orders compared to 2020.

Regarding the age of people who had higher participation, the group between 25 and 34 represented 26.48% of the total number of sessions and 29.75% of the transactions.

Meanwhile, the 35 to 44 age group accounted for 22.59% of the sessions and 21.88% of the transactions. Finally, the 18 to 24 group has 16.03% of the sessions and 16.3% of transactions.

PERUVIAN MARKET PROJECTIONS

In Peru, the e-commerce industry expects its growth to represent US$144 million by 2024.

In addition, 78% of total retail sales growth is expected by 2025, represented by physical stores, which will take on a new role as distribution centers, experience, and sales points.

For the retail sector, it is expected that 22% of its sales will occupy digital commerce in the country by 2025, which would mean a growth of 110%.
