Brazil elections 2022: Community of Portuguese Language Countries will monitor electoral process as observers

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – An electoral observation mission from the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP) will come to Brazil to monitor the October elections, the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) confirmed on April 27.

The CPLP has an Electoral Network, with representatives of the electoral bodies from Brazil, Portugal, Mozambique, Cape Verde, Guinea Bissau, and São Tome and Principe. In an administrative meeting held on April 27, the collegiate approved sending the mission to Brazil.

“For the TSE, the participation of the CPLP as an observer of the Brazilian elections is very important. We remember that our motto is peace and security in elections,” said Supreme Court Justice Edson Fachin, president of the TSE, on occasion.

It is typical for international observation missions during elections in Brazil to be present. Less common, however, is the simultaneous participation of several international bodies.

The TSE invited the CPLP on April 12. To give more reliability to this year’s electoral process, in this cycle, the Electoral Court intensified the invitations to international bodies to participate as observers in the elections in Brazil.

Recently, the Organization of American States (OAS), the Carter Center, the Mercosul Parliament (Parlasul), the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (Ifes), and the Inter-American Union of Electoral Organizations (Uniore) were also invited to send missions to Brazil. “Talks with these bodies are ongoing,” the TSE reported.
