Unvaccinated children denied entry in Brazil; Paraguay requests exemption

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Since February 14, Brazil requires that children over five years of age entering the country have two doses of covid vaccine. Many of them have already been denied entry.

The Paraguayan Vice-Minister of Health, Dr. Hernán Martínez, announced that his portfolio would ask the neighboring country for an exception for Paraguay, which is just starting its immunization campaign in the child population.

“As a Ministry, we will request consideration, and hopefully, it will be possible. I am not saying that we will not comply (with the requirement) because the country (Brazil) has the power to do so. Still, as countries that share borders, the idea is to attempt consideration or that they give us some time until we can have a greater number of children vaccinated,” he said.

Paraguay started the vaccination scheme against the coronavirus for children on January 31, and the first dose has just been applied. So far, only 170,000 children have been vaccinated out of the 270,000 registered and out of a target population of 850,000. They were immunized against Covid-19 with the Chinese vaccine Coronavac.
