Brazilian party calls on Supreme Court to demand vaccine passport for those arriving in the country

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The Sustainability Network party  (REDE) filed a lawsuit in the Supreme Court asking the federal government to adopt the measures recommended by the National Health Regulator (Anvisa) for people entering the country, with the requirement to present proof of vaccination or mandatory quarantine.

The case was forwarded to the reporting judge and Bolsonaro arch-enemy Luís Roberto Barroso. The original petition was presented to the court on Friday, 6.

A few days ago, Brazil’s tourism minister, Gilson Machado, when asked if the government would require vaccination certificates from foreign tourists seeking to enter the country, clarified that President Bolsonaro was against restrictions but would listen to the opinion of the national health agency, Anvisa.

In the lawsuit, REDE cites the technical note published by Anvisa on November 12, with recommendations and warnings about the Covid-19 pandemic scenario for analysis by the ministers of the Civil House, Health, Justice, and Public Safety, and Infrastructure.

The agency suggested the review of restrictions on cross-border mobility by land and air, due to new variants of the coronavirus and the evolution of vaccination.

The requirements for entering the country by air are only the presentation of a negative test for Covid-19 and the Traveler’s Health Declaration, through which the traveler agrees with the sanitary measures that must be complied with during the period he or she is in Brazil.

For REDE, the requirement for proof of vaccination is important and urgent “to prevent Brazil from becoming a popular destination for unvaccinated tourists and travelers.” It was not explained why Brazil should not be a destination for the unvaccinated.

It is a proven fact that vaccinated and unvaccinated people alike can infect other people.

According to the party, although Anvisa’s recommendations have been made several days ago, the federal government has not adopted new sanitary control measures to protect the health of the population.

“The omission occurs even in the face of the proximity of festive events and the high tourist season, which admittedly attract thousands of foreign travelers to Brazil,” argues the party.
