Covid-19: Brazil’s Rio de Janeiro state registers 100% ICU occupancy in 7 cities; capital at 93%

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The City Hall of Teresópolis in the hilly region of the state is registering 100% occupancy in its hospital systems, raising to 7 the number of cities in Rio de Janeiro with all Covid-19 ICU beds occupied. According to the Municipal Health Secretariat, there is full occupancy rate in Covid-19 ICU and ward beds, with all 49 taken.

The city hall of Teresópolis also reported that the Crisis Cabinet will meet next Monday, August 23, to assess the evolution of infections and hospitalizations in the past 14 days. In the last meeting on August 11, the reactivation of 3 ICU beds was requested, disabled due to low demand for hospitalizations.

More beds may be reactivated in the city should the occupancy rate remain above 90% during an average of 14 days, the secretariat said.

In the city of Rio de Janeiro, ICU occupancy rate has decreased but is still high. According to Municipal Health Secretary Daniel Soranz, Covid ICUs occupancy stands at 93%. On August 13, occupancy in the capital city stood at 95%.

According to the state government’s epidemiological panel, the cities of Itaguaí, in the Metropolitan Region; Itaperuna, in the Northwest; Nova Friburgo, in the Mountain Region; Bom Jesus de Itabapoana, Miracema and Cantagalo, all inland, are also registering full occupancy.
