Brazilian government investigates hacker attack on Federal Treasury

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The Ministry of Economy identified a ransomware attack on the Federal Treasury Secretariat’s (STN) internal network last Friday night, August 13.

In a statement, the Ministry of Economy said that “containment measures were immediately implemented and the Federal Police were called in.”

Ransomware is a type of malicious software (malware) used by cybercriminals to infect a computer or network, thereby blocking access to the system and encrypting data.

The impacts of the criminal attack are being assessed by security experts at the STN and the Digital Government Secretariat.

“In this first stage, it has been assessed that the attack did not cause damage to the Federal Treasury Secretariat’s structural systems, such as the Integrated Financial Administration System (Siafi) and others related to Public Debt. Corrective measures are being taken,” the note says.
