Mexico adds 7,573 new coronavirus infections and reaches 244,420 deaths (August 8)

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The Mexican Ministry of Health reported Sunday 7,573 new confirmed infections of Covid-19 and added 2,971,817 cases, 172 new deaths to reach 244,420, in the middle of the third wave of the pandemic in the country.

With these records, Mexico remains the fourth country globally with the most deaths from covid-19, behind the United States, Brazil, and India, and has returned to fifteenth in the number of confirmed infections, according to the Johns Hopkins University count.

Mexico is in the middle of the third wave of Covid-19 and had recorded four consecutive days with more than 19,000 daily infections, figures not seen since the peak of the second wave last January.

In addition, health authorities believe that, based on death certificates, the pandemic has left more than 350,000 dead in the country and estimate that Mexico has actually accumulated 3,172,544 cases of infection.

Of this figure, 139,361 are active cases, which have presented symptoms during the last 14 days and represent 4.4% of the total. The average occupancy of general beds in Mexican hospitals is 52% and 44% for intensive care beds.

With respect to deaths, Mexico City – the focus of the pandemic – accounts for 19% of all deaths nationwide, that is, almost one out of every five deaths.

VACCINATION PLAN

In the report, the authorities also indicated that the vaccination program, which covers everyone over 18 years of age, has administered 72.1 million doses of the vaccine against Covid-19, with 477,683 doses administered in the last day.

The report also stated that 27.36 million people had completed the complete vaccination schedule out of 126 million inhabitants.

This Sunday, Mexican President, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, announced that he would hold a telephone conversation on Monday with the Vice President of the United States, Kamala Harris, to make concrete the donation of more vaccines against the coronavirus and to advance in the vaccination plan.

Since December 23, 2020, the country has received 89.55 million doses from the British company AstraZeneca, the Russian company Sputnik V, the American companies Pfizer and Johnson & Johnson, and the Chinese companies CanSino and Sinovac.
