Chile overtakes Israel and becomes world leader in Covid-19 vaccination

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Israel was the country that vaccinated the fastest, with an average of 1.03 daily doses per 100,000 inhabitants. Chile has now registered an average of 1.08 and exceeds four million people vaccinated, authorities reported.

With an average of 1.08 daily doses per 100 inhabitants vaccinated over the last 7 days, Chile became on Tuesday, March 9th, the fastest country in the world in administering the vaccine against Covid-19.

This is evidenced by the latest data calculation conducted by the University of Oxford’s Our World in Data program, information that was also released by the Chilean authorities.

“In the world ranking, Chile is currently in first place among the countries that vaccinate the fastest, considering the average of the last week,” Minister of Health Enrique Paris told the press this Tuesday, after being provided with the data.

The data only counts single doses, and may not result in the total number of people vaccinated, depending on the scheme (for example, people receiving multiple doses).

On March 1st, Chile ranked 8th in this list, with 0.37 doses per 100 inhabitants, surpassed by Israel (1.12), the United Arab Emirates (0.68), the United Kingdom (0.58), the United States (0.54), Morocco (0.47), Bahrain (0.45) and Serbia (0.43). Then, from March 2nd to 3rd, Chile climbed from 7th to 3rd place in the world ranking.

To date, Israel had been leading in terms of dose administration, based on the average of the last seven days, currently with 1.03 doses, according to the latest data.

Likewise, based only on Monday’s data, Chile was also world leader in the administration of the vaccine per 100 inhabitants, with an average of 1.67 doses compared to the 1.20 doses administered by Israel that day.

“In addition, we have already administered almost 5 million doses, exceeding 4 million people vaccinated in a short time. Our country can be proud of how this process has unfolded,” the Minister noted.

A total of 4,176,094 people have already been vaccinated against Covid-19 in Chile, which represents more than 21% of the country’s total population.

Of these, 772,389 are people who have completed their vaccination schedule and have already been administered the two doses. Likewise, 2,653,488 doses have already been administered to people over 60 years of age.

The vaccination campaign deployed by Chilean health institutions is the leader in Latin America and one of the best in the world, and its success is based on the broad primary care network spread over a territory of more than 4,200 kilometers.
