Paraguay records second consecutive week high in daily Covid-19 cases

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Paraguay this Friday, February 26th, registered a new record of daily infections of Covid-19, with a total of 1,414 positive cases, reported the Ministry of Public Health and Social Welfare.

With this, the total number of confirmed since the first case was detected in March 2020, rises to 157,603.

The South American country once again has a peak of daily cases, taking into account that the previous record was registered on February 18, with a total of 1,369 positive cases.

In addition, according to the latest weekly report from the health portfolio, the current average of infected is around 1,094 cases per day, a sum that represents a new maximum since the beginning of the pandemic.

As for the deceased, the report indicates that in the last 24 hours there were another 17 deaths, bringing the total to 3,152.

In contrast, some 930 patients managed to overcome the disease, thus adding a total of 131,461 recovered; while another 955 remain hospitalized, 255 of them in an intensive care unit.

This Friday, the Paraguayan Minister of Health, Julio Mazzoleni, announced at a press conference that the arrival of 36,000 doses of AstraZeneca vaccines is expected for the first fortnight of March, through the COVAX mechanism.

They correspond to a batch of 304,800 doses that will arrive gradually between March and May of this year, while the total of 4,200,000 vaccines reserved by the country will be completed until the end of the year.

The official also indicated that at the same time direct negotiations continue with the manufacturing countries as well as with the laboratories, in order to achieve the immunization of the majority of the Paraguayan population.
