RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – A fire in an electrical substation of the Mexico City Metro on Saturday caused the closing of six lines, affecting thousands of passengers.
The Mayor of Mexico City, Claudia Sheinbaum, said a policewoman lost her life in the incident and at least 30 people were injured.
“An assessment of the damage is being done. The Federal Electricity Commission is supporting us. We still do not have information on when service will be reestablished,” she said.
The mayor added it is probable that the fire started due to a failure in the transformers.
“At the moment, lines 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 are suspended until further notice, since the control centers for these six metro lines are located in the same building,” she explained.
Authorities are using vehicles from other transportation lines, such as the Metrobus, as well as vehicles from the Ministry of Citizen Security to transport thousands of users to their destinations.
Sheinbaum said this is the first time service has been suspended on so many of Mexico City’s metro lines.
The Mexico City Metro transports about six million people every day, according to official data.
