RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Javier Berain made history by becoming the first homosexual to lead a police department in Mexico City. The Mexican patrol has been known to harass LGBTQIA+ people.

“It’s an honor to be the first openly LGBTI+ individual to be assigned the role of leader in the Mexico City police department,” the policeman celebrated.

Today, I graduated with the Diploma for Qualified Managers from the @UPCDMX_SSC. I appreciate the trust that @OHarfuch has placed on me. It’s an honor to be the first openly LBGTI+ person to become a @SSC_CDMX leader. pic.twitter.com/d0sfAsKxTo

Berain declares himself to be ” gay, effeminate and a socialist” and takes on the task of leading the department’s digital processes. The city’s Undersecretary of Human Rights and Sexual Diversity stated that being a homosexual “will contribute to the police being more inclusive” and congratulated him on the achievement.

Mexico City is experiencing a wave of change in favor of the LGBT community. In July, the Mexico City Congress passed a law that penalizes religious groups, medical professionals and psychologists who provide treatments to “cure” gays and lesbians with five years imprisonment.
